Coronavirus and hiking

Post by DixieFlyer »

Now that we are living in the era of "social distancing", it shouldn't be too surprising to see some hiking venues closed.

Here are a couple of examples:
* The Navajo Nation has closed all of their tribal parks: https://navajonationparks.org/public-notice/
* The road up to Kitt Peak is closed to the public...here is a pic that a friend took when he attempted to ride his bicycle up to the top: [ broken link removed ]

It would seem like hiking, especially in remote areas, would be one of the safer things that you can do...but with the frenzy that is going on, I imagine that there will be more closures in the coming days

No, I'm not terrified yet, because no one knows enough to be making predictions and mandating extreme actions based on those predictions. By no means am I saying its anything like a hoax, of course its serious, and other than the usual fringes everyone is treating it as such. But talk of world wars and mass deaths only feeds fear and panic. Absolutely, take common sense precautions. But I'm not prepared to force everyone into lockdown (yet).

Just saw people in Moab asking hikers and others to stay away this week. Apparently they only have two ventilators and those are designated for emergency trips to the next closest hospital 5 hours away. They are worried about the potential strain on the limited medical resources they have in the area.

Many regular contributors to HAZ are in a higher risk age category. If there are any of you that don’t have nearby family, friends, or neighbors that you can rely on, please shoot me a DM if I can run an errand for you so you can stay at home. I can’t guarantee toilet paper, but a trip to pick up a prescription or other need seems doable. I’m in Tempe, so Letty you’re on your own. ;)

Perhaps I should have made a more nuanced comparison, but I wanted to convey that this crisis will materially affect every single person in this country.

For the folks expecting to "shelter-in-place" for the foreseeable future, you might want to run out now and buy your big-screen TV before there's a run on them and you miss out... (like that's actually gonna happen? big box stores can only wish)

the only problem is that there are no sports to watch, so what's the use of having a TV? :)

With the chaos which is unloading right now, that wouldn't surprise me if that happened.

Yep, and when they run out, the looting will definitely get started. Screw the TP, I need a TV! That's the only thing still missing from this current "disaster". But with more and more businesses closing, I wouldn't be surprised to see it start.

Says .... "Gun sales are taking off"
Why shouldn't they as we know that next comes looting of the stores and then our homes.

This thread fell into ignorant fear mongering slower than expected. I thought it was going to happen yesterday for sure.

Funny how people won't take a pandemic seriously but they can't wait to freak out about people stealing their stuff.

I've been on the phone all day with customers and friends/family back home in Arizona. Every Arizonan I talked with today asked me whether looting or home invasions are up here in the SF Bay Area. I haven't seen any reports of looting or home invasions in the last few weeks, and it hasn't been brought up in the local media.
I think we'll all be better off if we prepare to help our neighbors (while maintaining a safe distance from each other!) rather than worry about armed robbers forcing their way into your home to steal toilet paper.

I don't understand the whole toilet paper hoarding thing. Kleenex would make more sense as it will be our noses that are running, not our asses. :-k
