AZ National Forest Closures

Post by chumley »

Ok, it's finally official.

Peralta, First Water, and Picketpost trailheads are closed. Plus just about everything else.

As of 2020-03-24 most are developed recreation sites and developed trailheads.

If visiting it would be wise to check "Alerts & Notices" on respective FS websites.
- Links to the forest websites are alway available on large screen devices on the HAZ Forum homepage left column: each forest name before the word "News" is clickable
- Guide Pages on HAZ tap forest name, last option is a link to the forest website

Closure links as of 2020-03-24

Coconino NF

Coronado NF

Kaibab NF

Prescott NF

Tonto NF

Kaibab is unrestricted as well, effective this morning. And the closure around Bill Williams is lifted too.

Prescott restrictions end Saturday morning.

Not a peep from Coronado yet on any of their channels.

I don't see Tonto lifting Fire Bans for their Forest, the Desert around here hasn't seen crap for rain yet and there's still a ton of desert out there to burn. I think that lifting it now is a mistake.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Maybe Tonto keeps Stage 2, but will they abandon Stage 3 and let me legally hike up Colonel Devin to Fred Haught, where I can have a fire now?

The title of the thread, see the title of the thread! I am perfectly fine to have a permanent fire ban for the Tonto, but I want to hike there, and this weekend!

Based on some facebook posts, it looks like the Tonto Forest is:
1) Closing the Bush Fire Burn area until March 31, 2021.
2) Implementing Stage 1 Fire restrictions everywhere else, starting on July 31
3) Closing some developed campsites due to COVID-19

Yay! at least maybe huh?
I'll bet there will be a massive haze of smoke coming off the rim this weekend from hundreds of campfires. It could get ugly...

I can't find Coronado saying they lifted anything. But I also can't find anything that indicates that there are any restrictions in place to begin with. The other AZ NFs flash fire restrictions at the top of the homepage. Coronado has nothing. Unless there's a sign posted along the road on my way to camp that says no, I'd assume that there are no restrictions in place. But I agree ... "unclear".

But it also says this - which is why I said it's unclear ...

Due to widespread precipitation across the area, additional rain in the weather forecast, and a rise in fuel moistures, it has been determined that the likelihood of wildfire has lessened to the degree that the restrictions can be rescinded.

I completely agree it is unclear. One part of the website says the fire restriction is lifted. And another part says the restriction is still in effect.

I was simply posting a response when someone stated they couldn't find anywhere it stated there ever was a restriction, that such a statement appears directly on the Coronado FS's home page.
