Re: Atmosphere Comparison
@chumley
This year definitely *feels* different than past years. I can't remember the last time I saw a forecast for the last week of June that is as mild as what I'm seeing for next week (high '90s). Of course this means that humidity is going to be awful, but hopefully we'll get the right balance of moisture and heat to kick off some actual storms.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
The QPF forecast for the next 7 days does not align with the excitement of forecasters and the supposed tropical moisture tap. 1/10th across the central desert with ~1" along the rim. More in the eastern mountains though, which is good.

Light rain over Montana Mt in the past half hour. Very light over the White Tanks & Estrella ridge. Heavy in the Bradshaws now and Pine Mountain Wilderness.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
From the NWS on facebook
A flood advisory has been issued for a strong storm over Gisela and Star Valley until 6:30 PM. Radar has indicated over 2 inches of rain has already fallen and continues to fall. Localized flooding in low lying areas is expected.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
Too bad that the "new and improved" NWS radar is virtually worthless and is much less user friendly and doesn't every seem to want to load or work correctly, and so I can't watch these storms the way I did in past summers. Not quite sure how having a clunky product that never wants to work is an improvement, but the NWS thinks it is.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
Perhaps the MRMS page is more akin to the "classic" 1990s radar page that preceded the "new and improved" version?
It has most of the same controls and features, plus one or two more just to make sure that people who don't like change aren't thrown into too much shock.

@SuperstitionGuy
Confusion isn't an issue. It simply doesn't load about 75% of the time. It is very slow when it does load, and if the radar is there, it is really jerky when it plays. My computer is 18 months old and operates flawlessly on pretty much every other functioning website. I never had a single issue with the radar it replaced.

117 maybe 118 forecast for Las Vegas over the next few days. It's looking like nothing as bad for Arizona cities. The weak moisture flow is working!

That 597 ridge over the southwest is going to warm things up to some uncomfortable levels this weekend. Combine that heat with some dewpoints in the upper sixties, going to feel pretty gross outside.

We have power back after almost three days out with highs in the mid 90s and humidity through the roof. Now the remains of Elsa are on our doorstep and new outages may be in store.

The worst. Part of the consolidation of energy providers means that when our electricity goes out, it's almost always repaired by someone who has to drive out from Ohio or Indiana. The small number of local crews deal with areas of higher population density.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
I keep hearing that Flagstaff tied its all-time record of 97 degrees yesterday. However the chit chat online is that everyone says it was a hundred degrees at their house. But that's not the official reading, of course. And then they were all saying that they don't have AC. My motorhome has two AC units so I'm comfortable. I went to Diamond Creek three times this week for my job. It is hot down there! And the bus is not air-conditioned. Doesn't bother me too much. I get in the river before leaving.

Re: Atmosphere Comparison
@azbackpackr
It was only 96 degrees in Flagstaff yesterday! While that was a record for the day, it wasn't Flagstaff's all time record of 97, which still stands from decades ago. However, that is pretty significant, since being 1 degree off, I guess that would be like Phoenix hitting 121 degrees, since 122 is what I found for Phoenix's hottest recorded temperature.
It was 122 in Needles, CA. That beat the old daily record of 121, which was set in 2003.
I'm just glad I am not in any of that! When I look online and see my old house is now valued at more than $400K, between the high cost of living, all the other things, and the heat, I lived in the Valley at the last time I think could have to enjoy it. I don't understand who wants to move to that, but whatever. I suspect most Valley dwellers are just happy it wasn't 117, or 120, yesterday.

As usual, take what you "keep hearing" with the grain of salt that comes out of whatever shaker you're getting it from.
Flagstaff broke the daily record of 94, reaching 96. But was short of the all-time record of 97.
A good source for accurate weather statistics is the National Weather Service. Phantom Ranch and Page did tie their all-time records and Winslow set a new one. It was a warm one.

They were baking cookies in Death Valley at 130.9 one day but it was short of the 134 record.

My recipes all call for 350 or higher. I've never sous vide'd cookies at 130. I bet they end up pretty tasty though.
