2022 Fire Season

Post by azbackpackr »

Well, here we go...

A fire out past Doney Park, northeast of Flagstaff, is fairly close to where I spend my summers. I was going to move my car there tomorrow. But I guess I won't be moving it there just yet. I'll park it somewhere else.

And... a friend and I were going to start a little bicycle tour over by Prescott, on Thursday. But part of our route is under a closure, due to the Crooks fire.

@joebartels
I haven't seen Prescott NF post about it yet but they are certain to align with all the others (Tonto, Coco, A-S, Coro, Kaibab). In it's most simple form, stage 2 restrictions are in effect for all public land in Arizona south of Grand Canyon.

While different agencies have slightly different definitions of stages, it means no campfires, no charcoal/bbq, no target shooting.

The Railroad Fire started today on the west side of Flagstaff. My daughter said it was pretty close to her house, they could easily see huge flames. She and her husband began packing their 2 cars immediately. They were soon informed they were on "Set" status. Scary!

However the fire has been contained pretty well and now they are on "Ready" status.

there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there regarding fire restrictions. This link might be helpful:

TAOS, N.M. (Reuters) - Two blazes that grew into New Mexico's largest ever wildfire were both started by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the agency said on Friday, 5/27. Forest Service investigators determined the Calf Canyon Fire was caused by a "burn pile" of branches that the agency had ignited and thought was out.... but it reignited on April 19. That blaze on April 22 merged with the Hermits Peak Fire, which the USFS started with a "controlled burn" in windy conditions that went out of control on April 6.
So the taxpayer pays (and how!) to ignite these fires and then gets to pay AGAIN to try and suppress it. And maybe a third time when the area is remediated.

@hikeaz And they did this press release on the Friday before Memorial Weekend, talk about burying a bad headline lol at least their PR person or media contact, seems to have more brains than the guys starting the fires on a red flag day.

What it really means for a wildfire to be ‘contained’
It's not about putting out all the flames.

SANTA FE, N.M. (Reuters) -The U.S. government will fund New Mexico's full wildfire response, Biden said on Saturday, speaking from Santa Fe amid anger from survivors over the blaze that was started by federal officials. "We have a responsibility to help the state recover," Biden told elected officials and emergency responders at an afternoon briefing in New Mexico's capital, where he was reviewing efforts to fight the Southwestern state's biggest blaze in recorded history.
"Today I'm announcing the federal government's covering 100% of the cost," (Correction: the American TAXPAYER is paying (and HOW)). the president said, though earlier in the day he had said he would need congressional approval for some funding. Investigators found that a Forest Service controlled burn jumped out of bounds on April 6 to start the Hermits Peak Fire. The Calf Canyon Fire was caused by a USFS burn pile of logs and branches on April 19. The two fires merged on April 22.

there is another fire in Flag -- this one (the Pipeline Fire) is just west of Schultz Pass Rd. Based on the GPS coordinates of the fire, it looks to be about 1.5-2.0 miles SW of Schultz Tank

There's some kind of fire activity showing on VIIRS and MODIS about 3.5 miles west of Hannigan Meadow.

There were all sorts of Hot Shots/ Forrest Service trucks southeast of the peaks yesterday, almost like they were waiting for something to happen.

"Person of interest" has been detained regarding Pipeline Fire, suspected arson. 89 is closed. VIIRS is showing it could be as far east as 89 already, but it could just be picking up the smoke plume.

We are in "Set" mode out here in Doney Park, just outside Flagstaff city limits. My motorhome is more or less ready to go, and can roll out of here if necessary. I'm not too concerned, however, since the fire is generally moving away from us, and we are in a fairly defensible space.

Inciweb has been next-to-useless for obtaining information about the Pipeline Fire, and new Haywire Fire (maybe the former sparked the latter??) I have been following Coconino county page, the USFS page, plus the NASA heat-sensing satellite page:
https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/ma ... 6,35.3,11z

I am still at home, and my motorhome is more or less ready to drive away, but I doubt we will be given a "Go" order. We are still in "Set" status.
