Short closures on I-17 today
Drivers north of Phoenix will face brief freeway closures Tuesday that will allow a road crew to clear away rocks.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Interstate 17 North near Black Canyon City would be blocked off around 10:30 a.m. for about 15 minutes, maybe less. More work would be done at the same site around 1 p.m., lasting 15 min. +/- as well.
Southbound lanes near Sunset Point would follow suit at noon. That closure was expected to last an hour.

Drivers should also be aware of a full weekend closure of eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Seventh Street and State Route 51 in north Phoenix for the ongoing freeway widening project.

...it is up to drivers to behave responsibly, operate their vehicles according to the law and, above all, be patient and courteous with each other.

"Sounds" better than anticipated...lane closures along I-17 will occur only during off-peak travel times in either the northbound or southbound direction, depending on the day of the week. Most lane closures will occur weeknights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Lane closures that impact drivers will not be scheduled on weekends and holidays to keep I-17 open and keep traffic moving during heavy travel days.

I wouldn't wager 25¢ ... but I will mention that I've been impressed with the progress of the I-10 Broadway Curve project. Every time I drive through there, a new bridge or other significant improvement seems to be complete.LosDosSloFolks wrote: ↑Sep 26 2022 10:30 amThe link states an approximate 3 year completion date. Somehow ADOT has been able to resurface large stretches of the 87 between FH and Payson with almost no noticeable delay to the weekend travelers. Our Payson people might have different weekday commuter experiences to share. Even the 260 resurfacing east of Payson seems to have occurred with minimal impact. It's quite nice.

Re: I-17
I don't like driving on that part of I-17 because of how unsafely some people drive, especially over-speed vehicles with trailers rapidly and frequently changing lanes on the tight curves.joebartels wrote:...it is up to drivers to behave responsibly, operate their vehicles according to the law and, above all, be patient and courteous with each other.

That makes him ~20% more likely to guess right about whether his traction will hold and 50% more likely to have actually checked whether he can fit into the space he's aiming at without somebody speeding up or slowing down to accommodate.The_Eagle wrote:@chumley does not tow a trailer.

You've been lucky.big_load wrote:over-speed vehicles
I have never driven that section of I-17 where driving over the speed limit was even possible. I am always stuck doing 20-40 mph when it's a 75 mph limit.

Cruised up to Cordes Jct and work has begun in earnest. Clear cutting vast sections of the median between the lanes north of Anthem and also starting to work over the side of the road near Bumble Bee.

@kingsnake
I wouldn't say they're suicide lanes given the concrete barriers and gates, but this gives me some hesitation regarding whether it will actually accomplish anything:

Get one truck or RV driver who decides to use the flex lane going up the hill, and it's going to get just as backed up as it is today.Flex lanes will not be limited to High Occupancy Vehicles, and there will be no vehicle restrictions in the flex lanes. State laws prohibit ADOT from restricting commercial trucks from using the flex lanes. However, signage will recommend that slower-moving vehicles stay in the general purpose I-17 lanes.

Re: I-17
Truck drivers ignore the signs on I-10 where it cuts down to two lanes for 20 miles north of Casa Grande all the time. ADOT has at least 10 signs telling truckers that they are restricted to the right lane. But every time I'm on I-10 there is always a truck going 63.5 MPH trying to overtake a truck going 63.25 MPH that clogs up both lanes for miles.ShatteredArm wrote:Get one truck or RV driver who decides to use the flex lane going up the hill, and it's going to get just as backed up as it is today.
