I discovered, on a trip in June (Rock Creek waterfall attempt), how much better it was to breath through my nose while backpacking rather than through my mouth. The most noticeable benefit was that I didn't need/drink as much water during the hike.
I have since found this specific benefit mentioned in this (long) video. (At 32:00.)

Be careful. It's not quite "a jungle out there." But history shows that it can be dangerous out there.
