Reavis Fire

Post by joebartels »

I think it was just two days ago I was reading GTG's comments about putting out mulitple campfires.

I don't know how this one passed me by but the Reavis Fire is 50% under control.(it must and hopefully is tiny) I hadn't even heard about it! This is just sad and you know it's the carelessness of some idiot like so many others. It really turns my stomach.

You know I've only been hiking for about six years now but there seems to be a bunch of fires. I'm curious from Nighthiker, the zumas or whoever thats been around here longer... 'Do wildfires seem more abundant in the past 15 years then say the previous 15 years?'

The late 70's and early 80's were a lot of wildland fires in Central Arizona in what is called the urban wildland interface. The decreased rain fail the past several years and the warmer than usual temperatures it may be a very busy wildland fire season across not only Central Arizona but the Southwest. Temperatures (+ 90's) and relative humidity (less than 10 %) and the wildland fuel moisture (less than 40 %)+ very high fire danger.

Joe, where did you hear about this fire? I can't find a thing on the forest service's site, nor on the geomac site (http://geomac.usgs.gov/.

Ya I scanned about 1500 search engines and came up with zippo!

It was on the 5 o'clock Fox news (Channel 10 I believe)

I checked phoenix360.com but nothing there either.

I'm just hoping it's small... but the video looked like a pretty good size canyon with a diagonal fire line breaking across

The FS site or something said it only listed fires over a 100 acres. That's still pretty darn big. I know from from sitting on the combine as young boy that harvesting a 100 acre square takes a good while.

I found channel 10's website, it's absolutely no help. Nothing more than a one page ad for the news & Seinfeld. I'll watch their news tonight and see if they mention it.
Did they say where the fire is?

They're site is phoenix360.com
BTW... anybody looking to buy PhoenixThreeSixty.COM - contact joe

I was tappin' the keys when it came on the news... I listened closely for any canyon names but they didn't offer any place names. Maybe I'm a moron and it was a story about past fires... but that wouldn't explain the 50% contained since it broke out yesterday part.

Ryan / Reavis

Let me backtrack here... The tv is on my right, I have have little hearing in that ear. I hit a telephone post at about 22 mph around age 13. They said the ear canal was damaged, of course I was out for three days with a concushion so I remember little. Then I worked at car customizing shop for a few years after highschool. With all the pounding bass it's amazing I can hear at all...

As of monday night the fire in the Superstition Wilderness was called the Reavis Fire and was reported at the time of the broadcast (4pm, 4/29) as 20 acres. The video that was broadcasted it appeared the fire was not located in Reavis Valley. The forest service wildland website only list fires greater than 100 acres.
I'm curious from Nighthiker, the zumas or whoever thats been around here longer... 'Do wildfires seem more abundant in the past 15 years then say the previous 15 years?'
Well, sure they do. We don't have a handy 'stat sheet' to prove it but, yes, wildlands fires do seem more common in recent years. However...that's not necessarily a surprise. More people=more fires.
Look at the population growth of Arizona and the metroplex in general.
Incredible! More people=more visits to public lands. More visits to public lands=more campfires, etc. etc. It never ceases to amaze us when we see people building blazing 'white man fires' during warm and balmy weather. Here we are in shirtsleeves and we drive past a group of people standily happily around a fire with flames leaping 4-6 feet into the air.
Maybe it's a 'primal urge' sort of thing--you can't really be camping unless you have a campfire. We read a story recently about the waves of illegals coming across the border and how they are all building 'warming fires.' Some of these warming fires are getting out of control and starting full blown wildlands fires. We wonder a lot about the incidence of lightning. If the climate is supposedly changing and we get a lot of 'dry storms' and they are accompanied by lots of lightning that starts lots of fires, what and/or who would you blame for that? The industrialized world? Clearly, times have changed. 'Outdoor ethics' now sometimes seems like a classic oxymoron. People on ATV's are ripping up vegetation in epic quantities. People in jacked up pickups are roaring down narrow roads at awesome speeds. Target shooters blaze away without regard for nearby houses or campsites. People use the foests to dump all manner of washing machines, bedding and just plain kitchen waste. Since the DUI and open container laws have stiffened, beer drinkers think nothing of disposing of the 'evidence' en masse in the forest pullouts. Untended campfires and careless smokers tossing their live butts out the window are but one of many symptoms of epidemic proportions in the lack of 'outdoor ethics.'
If yesterday's newspaper report that Arizona is going to double in population again in 20 years is correct, we can look at the upward trend in wildlands fires are a 'done deal' and simply get used to losing huge chunks of our favorite places. We both now have the attitude that we better get out and enjoy what we have before it is lost because, in spite of the incredible growth over the past 20 years, 'we ain't seen nothin' yet' and these times we are in now still qualify as 'the good old days.'
Hike often, hike more and Enjoy it while you can!

'White man fire' brings up an interesting point:

Manifest Destiny :(

Change is inevitable. Scary at times :(
