water AZT#18 Reavis Canyon

Im thinking of hiking this section next week. Has anyone been to these
potential water sources lately ? Ive seen the "FarOut" data.

mile 311 Reavis trail canyon
mile 318 Rogers spring
mile 324 Reavis creek (assume Walnut spring at 328 has water)

Rogers is dry. Reavis canyon is dry although the ranch on that stretch has water and mud spring does (the actual spring, the trough is bone dry.)
Reavis creek has water like always

I am planning a 5-day loop hike from Peralta to Tortilla Ranch, then back around through Coffee Flat, starting in 2 weeks.
It looks like there has been no rain for a long time (I am in Boston). Can anyone tell me if Charlie Boys is running? I plan to cache water at Tortilla Ranch and Coffee Flat, but would be happy to rely on Charlie Boys on night 1.

Thank you very much ! Ill change my plan to

1) hwy 60 to mud spring.
2) mud spring to reavis creek
3) reavis to walnut spring
4-5 -> back

Is mud spring close to the 'trough', presumably follow a pipe from the trough ?

It’s pretty close. Maybe an 1/8 a mile at most? Just follow the creek bed north. You’ll find an ammo can with a lead and “bucket” (from some AZT supporter) and the spring itself has a very obvious manmade/stone capture area

I haven't seen any recent updates anywhere but I imagine the situation is much the same; that spring itself is pretty reliable even if the trough isn't. There's the old ranch that's about 2.25-2.5 miles south of there that has troughs that are full of water (and the floater works, too, for more fresh water) as well. So that's a good source instead or "just in case"

Finally got out there, as xsproutx predicted there was water at mud spring and Reavis creek. Also at walnut spring. And there are pools in the stream beds from picket post to walnut spring although they may not last long as it was getting hot. However at Reavis creek it was in the 20's or below at night vs ~ 45 at walnut ! Saw. a rescue helicopter at Reavis creek, the group in question headed me off from the problem so Im not sure what happened. Great to be there again and thanks sprout ! Also the windmill had water as you had said. Rob

Glad you had a good time. Last time I was in that area I had a similar situation was the temp was 20 degrees lower than I expected, camping near Mud spring. Luckily it was a time where I had more cold weather stuff than I normally carry.
Safe to say the Mud spring trough was empty? Did you have to use the stuff in the ammo can to get water from the spring or was it high enough you could just collect? Sounds like you might not have needed to collect from there at all though, potentially

The concrete trough at mud spring was dry. I followed the instructions in the metal box to walk up the
wash (and your comment) to the actual spring. Wish I had known about the 'blue bandana' markers at the trail that point to the spring instead of getting scratched up walking up that creek bed from the trough ! a I could bend over into the spring pretty easily to reach it with a cup. Yes I definitely needed water at that point though I stupidly carried extra in case it was dry. Also in following the black piping to the spring from the trough I noticed many breaks in the line , does that box ever fill up ?

I've seen it full/half full but it was certainly due to rain events I suspect. Pretty sure the hose is melted at some point, too, even.
