Wildflowers

Post by joebartels »

The lower desert areas of the state seem to be setting up for a nice wildflower season :pray: :y: :pray:

If these weekly to bi-monthly rains keep up we might see something mid January if not sooner

I’ve not seen a single speck of green on SoMo.

On the bright side, no weeds in my yard this year. I was thinking all the diesel I spray around was finally having an effect :lol: but maybe it’s just climate change.

The first key ingredient to a good spring wildflower season (which social media would self-define a 'superbloom') may have occurred a month ago, but if that was too early, it has definitely occurred this week. November is perfect.

I was discussing this with Jaelyn as she has never been here during wildflower season. I thot the rain had to be specifically in December, so I told her I wasn't sure. Fortunately, she can make those last minute plans once I give her the heads up.

It will be interesting to see what we get, but just about anything would be better than flowerless spring 2024. Altho, it's really better for me if there are less flowers so I can actually keep up a hiking pace rather than a distracted pace...

@Pivo
I've seen her spell it that way for years, and have wondered if she knows the urban usage. Probably not.

I'm just glad someone else noticed.

you would be correct. I've been using that shorthand version for almost as long as I can remember. It truly amazes me at the things I continue to learn so late in life... like root beer has no caffeine, dairy dries your mouth. Thanks for helping me out. I wonder how many others knew that and never told me; after all, I used it a lot in my writings.

@tibber
I never heard of it until now, either, but why would I have?

I don't think any adult English-speaking human had any problem deciphering the meaning of Tibber's shorthand. Language can be a fun thing. Especially English. A word can have so many different meanings! While Urban Dictionary can help someone with terms used in pop culture, like any user-generated content, there's a lot of complete dude poo mess on there too. For entertainment, look up your own name. There are usually a pretty humorous selection of definitions to choose from. Perhaps no name has better definitions than mine: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chumley

And if you ever look at my name and wonder if I know the urban usage? ... oh, I definitely know! :lol:

As for wildflowers

I've always had the impression that December is too late. But this is certainly not an area of expertise for me and would gladly be corrected. I suspect that different flowers may react differently to conditions. Poppies might respond in a way that lupine does not.

Brittlebush will grow anywhere anytime and nobody should care. It's the rusty oak fall foliage of spring wildflowers.

I tot I taw a putty tat.

Hope the wildflower thing happens. I'll enjoy the photos. Unfortunately, this will be the first winter since 2012-2013 that I am spending away from the desert. I'm intensely missing Yuma and Needles right now. I doubt I will be able to go down there. Watch for cross country skiing posts (if I can ever find my boots in my self-storage unit! The skis and poles stick up, easy to find!)

I'm a caregiver for a family member, that's why I'm sorta stuck. Lots to do here, though, I'm not bored. Just missing the desert. Yes, I need to post up my hikes, have several I haven't posted, including some super nice leaves at Pole Knoll.

We saw lots of those yellow ground cover flowers popping up where we camped at Mas Agua Caliente. I went to google them and it seems yellow flowers is a bit broad.
