Just called the visitor center and they say that Bear Mountain access is currently restricted because of road construction. This adds at least 2 miles each way.
Any suggestions for an alternative hike roughly as long, with some good elevation gain and at least as scenic?

good news, bad news
Hey, thanks for your post! I was unaware of road work out there and a pard and I were planning on Bear Mtn. this Friday. Opps!
Well, the bad news might be that the road is closed. But we hope the good news is that the road will be a lot better after they are done, whoever "they" are.
We suggest Wilson Mountain. It's in the guide books as Wilson Mountain South. The TH is at Midgely Bridge--where the Hari Krishna's sell t-shirts.
The Wilson Mountain Trail is, as far as we know, the only official National Recreation Trail in the Sedona vicinity. Does anyone know of others? If so, we'd sure like to know, too.
It will probably be more muddy up top on Wilson than Bear but, hey, who cares?
Happy Trails,
j
