Wow, you must not be reading the paper: illegal immigrant roundup/blockade. It's getting a lot of ink nationwide, even in NJ. Newark Star-Ledger included a photo of hooded posse members waiting for action (on page 2, if I remember right).

After a week of tough talk, a 250-member sheriff's posse charged with finding and arresting undocumented immigrants made just one arrest in its inaugural desert search early Thursday morning.

The posse, made up of existing sheriff's deputies and unpaid, trained volunteers, Wednesday night launched night patrols in desert areas and major roadways southwest of Phoenix.

It was looking for undocumented immigrants to arrest under a state smuggling law that allows local law enforcement to arrest and charge suspected human and drug smugglers with a state-level felony. Smuggling already was a federal felony.

Since March, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has arrested 147 undocumented immigrants and smugglers under the law as interpreted by Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Thomas argues that the smuggling law can be applied to the smuggled immigrants themselves. By paying a smuggler to enter the country, Thomas says, an undocumented immigrant is committing conspiracy to smuggle, punishable by up to two years in jail.

The Sheriff's Office announced last week that it would dedicate an entire posse to arresting undocumented immigrants under the law.

"We're going to arrest any illegal who violates this new law," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "I'm not going to turn these people over to federal authorities so they can have a free ride back to Mexico. I'll give them a free ride into the county jail."

At the launch Wednesday night, Arpaio told his Sheriff's Posse to not worry about costs or jail space but to arrest as many undocumented immigrants as they found.

But only one man was arrested.

Deputies tried to pull over a pickup truck about 12:45 a.m. Thursday, but the truck took off in the desert, and its 15 to 20 occupants scattered. Only one of them was tracked down despite night-vision equipment, spotlights and a helicopter.

"It just makes me angry," Arpaio said Thursday. "People say these are helpless people coming into the United States just to work, and yet when they see law enforcement, they run. If they were trying to obey the law, why are they running?

"That doesn't make me happy," he continued. "We didn't catch anybody else, and I don't know why."

Arpaio speculated that the night was slow because potential border crossers have heard that if they're caught in Maricopa County, they won't get very far. Then again, maybe it was just a slow night, he said. Either way, the posse will continue its patrols for undocumented immigrants.

"This isn't a one-night operation," Arpaio said. "We're going to keep going and keep booking them into the county jail. We're up to 147. I don't care if we go to 1,000 or 2,000 illegals. We'll make room for them. I've got a lot of tents out there."

The Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law in Los Angeles is challenging the application of the smuggling law to undocumented immigrants.

"You cannot charge someone with conspiracy to violate a law that inherently involves two people, because then you could just charge every single person involved with conspiracy," said Peter Schey, president of the human rights group. "Say you have an adult participating in consensual sex with a 16-year-old. You can't charge the 16-year-old with conspiracy to commit statutory rape."

Meanwhile, the Serial Shooter blasting away in the valley (last I heard- the count was 5 murders, not counting the dogs, of course), continues to run free.

Hard not to be pessimestic about the posse's priorities. Of course, this is an uneducated statement, despite the witty alliteration.

I quit reading the Phoenix paper last year, I only read the White Mtn. Independent. I watch the TV news about once a week, and read a national news weekly magazine, so I keep very marginally informed. I also just spent 5 days hiking in s. Utah, further compounding my lack of interest in matters political, societal or legal. I just don't care any more. I even seem to have lost some friends by having this attitude. Oh, well!

The big news up here in the White Mountains, while we're on news stories, is that campfires and cigarette smoking will be banned in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest starting this coming Monday May 15. This will likely be in place until there is sufficient monsoon rain later in the summer.

I gues that explains it . I certainly can see where cathymocha is coming from. If I were plodding along the trail and suddenly encountered the folks pictured in the paper, I might be due for a change of underwear.

Politics may or may not be a concern, but I would sure hope safety is a concern.

I've had two encounters in what most would not consider area's of concern. The first was leaving Table Top. Basically I went on my hike and came back to a crowd of illegals. A guy in the group approached me and "told" me to leave. Being grateful to have that option, I did just that! I'll admit I was nieve and probably should have just turned around the second I noticed the un-ordinary. The second being in the Eagle Tail Wilderness. Came across a group like a mile into the hike. This time it was in a deep ravine. I just turned the corner and said "oh sh**" Luckily this group was non aggressive by any means.

I really didn't think that much about it until listening to the news about $2000 per illegal. Both groups had somewhere near 25 people, that's $50,000. Even if it's only half that my life doesn't mean much to them if I got in their way (albeit by accident, but it could happen)

BTW... Table Top is near Casa Grande not the border. Eagle tail is barely south of I-10 on route to California.

I carry a handgun for self-defensive sometimes, although I have never had to use it. I think it would be a good idea in those areas you've mentioned, providing one is willing to learn safe handling, etc.
