Sizing Digital Photos

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how do you size photos to fit the screen when you upload to a website?

I'm new to digital photography, and don't quite have a grasp on it all yet. When I posted my photos of Escudilla a month ago, the larger version of the photos was much larger than the computer screen and scrolling was neccesary to view the entire image. I shoot large files in my camera and I'm sure this has something to do with it.

So I'm wondering if you guys shoot medium or small image files, or if you resize the images in a photo editing program (like PhotoShop)? Any help would be appreciated. I couldn't find any info on the internet believe it or not.

Anything I typically post on the web is 640-480 I want to say. No scrolling necessary for that. I actually had a program that came with an old Fujifilm camera of mine that downsized it pretty easily. I would just select all the pictures within a file then it would make a new folder with the new downsized files. Keeping the originals untouched of course. I know you can do it in photoshop as well, just don't think it's as simple as that.

There is an "Image Resize" option in Photoshop, and it lets you select whatever dimensions you want. But, if you resize a photo file smaller, you have to adjust the pixels as well. I suppose I'll have to read up on this stuff.

i'd recommend sizing down to 950 or less width and let the height auto calculate

if it's a portrait shot i'd size down to 500 width

over eighty percent of the members here use 1024x768 screen resolution

With Adobe Photoshop all things are possible! Maybe it's different in some of the latest Photoshop editions (I use Photoshop 6), but under Image: Image Size, you can either use Pixel Dimensions or Document Size to adjust the size of your image (adjusting both isn't required). You can also use the Crop Tool on the toolbar to crop your image to any size or dimension you want. I usually crop the images I post on HikeAZ to 960 by 640 pixels.

Thanks for the help guys! I think I got it figured out though. My photos loaded up great on Arizonahikers.com. Later, when I have time, I will post them on this site. Then I'll know for sure if what I did is correct. Thanks again!

In response to Matt Hoffman's reply: There is also a cool thing in Photo Shop (at least the Deluxe version I have) that you can batch file the sizing down of the pictures. it is in the same menu when you save a file. And it will do a bunch of them for you at a time. I had over 1000 images that I took in Australia this summer and wanted to put them on a CD for some people that don't have a DVD drive and reduced them all in about 15 minutes or so (actually the computer did it all by itself...
