white fibrous material in Barks Canyon Creek

Post by llinderman »

On 1/26/07, I was hiking Barks Canyon Creek. I noticed a lot of white fibrous material. It clung to the rocks and gravel; sometimes it looked kind of spider webby or like paper that had been wetted and then reconstituted.. I thought it might be asbestos, but I never really saw raw asbestos before.

Any ideas?

Yeah, it's white on the rocks, but I believe the stuff is green when it's wet, growing in the water. Then it dries out and turns white, which is what you see on the rocks. :)

I think the white, fibrous material issue has been solved. I hiked Boulder Canyon yesterday and found lots of it. It was in abundance wherever pools of water would have accumulated. Several people on this string guessed it was algae, and now I agree with them. When I saw it three weeks ago in Bark Canyon it was all white. But this time I found a lot of it that was still green; apparently it had not yet been bleached by the sun.

Thanks for the update! I have photos of it changing in Barks, but doubted since you must know! Then when I saw the white cow patties near Woodbury I was pretty much sold.
