Looking for Hiking Partner in April/May

Post by SherpaTom »

I'm from the east and do all of my hiking in the White Mountains, NH so I have no knowledge of any western ranges or mountains to climb. I am coming to the Grand Canyon the end of April as part of a Hike for Discover for Cancer Research and want to extend my trip. I would like to venture out and do some hiking in AZ. I do not have details as to where I am staying but probably will need to rent a car in Flagstaff. I was looking for someone to hook up with as I prefer not to hike solo. I am not even sure what the weather is like that time of year, snow covered peaks?

I am 50 maled, an avid hiker @ modest/fast pace, in good shape as I run 3-4 times/week. I am looking for day hike(s), possibly Sun Apr 30 & Mon May 1.

Perhaps you link me to some websites which would be helpful, i.e.

In response to SherpaTom's reply:

If you end up around Flagstaff, MT Humphreys is the highest point in AZ and a nice day hike. There may be some snow but probably not a lot on the trail. In addition Sedona is nearby and the red rock is well worth exploring. There are several possible day hikes around Sedona. I'm not sure what my schedule will be like two months from now but I'll keep it in mind.

There's also a good number of ancient Indian ruins around the area too, if you're into the whole cultural aspect of things.

Sounds good...I had been looking at that peak and would definitely be interested.

Is White tank mountain region anything worth while?

The White Tanks down in PHX area? Not really, it's nice in the winter when everything else is too cold, but come Spring you'll want to stay up north around Sedona/Flagstaff/Grand Canyon.

If it rains heavy late Oct and early Nov the White Tanks are a wildflower phenomenon(not this year :( ). Otherwise I'd wouldn't consider them much more than a nice local hike, not a destination.
