Squaw Peak Flag

Post by joebartels »

I was going to slip this into the big Flag controversy thread. Then realized that was on the old forum. Anyhow, I got a pic of the flag in the middle of the night. Had to do some serious tweaking to get it to show up

I told you to go to bed!
It's not there anymore, the flag that is.
Nothing but rocks, ravens and rebar up there.

I refuse to go to bed!!!

I took the photo just hours ago. It's there! The one near the upper peak changes weekly. This one is the mini scramble over the real peak then down. Imagine South Mountain as the background.

Cool shot Joe!

Is the flag on Picketpost still there? I haven't been up there since September.

Hiking down Squaw Peak last weekend I came upon a Phoenix Parks employee carrying a state flag down the mountain. I asked him about their flag policy on the mountain and he said they were cool with the US flag for a while but then people began putting misc. stuff up there so they've begun taking them down regularly.

If it's a regular sized flag (3x5), I really enjoy seeing it planted on the top of that craggy peak flapping in the wind against a cobalt blue sky.

I am not familiar with this controversy. I just moved out here from the east. Would anyone like to enlighten me with the particulars?

I think... the controversy was over the Flag somebody put up on Weaver's Needle. It's a Wilderness.

Personally I don't see a problem with the Flag.

Although I think I'm in a boat of one when comes to being against GEO-Caching in a wilderness or NF.

There was a large american flag on one of the peaks in Thunderbird park a few weeks ago.

The mad flagger strikes even in Glendale.

Think some concern was expressed over the flag at the top of Squaw peak. When I first hiked Squaw Peak, there was a fairly large flag, maybe 3' X 5'; later there was a smaller one, maybe 1'X2'. They were exposed to the elements and not lit at night as flags are supposed to be. Actually, I thought it was pretty neat and I wanted to thank the person(s) that put it up.

The reason I brought up the flag thing is because I thought it may have been a local legend of sorts. You know kinda a like an urban legend like the Lost Dutchman's gold. Is there some sort of story behind why the flags are placed up on these peaks or is it just something that has just recently started happening? Oh by the way I have a tendancy to read into things too much and if that is the case hear please let mt know!! :D

Not positive, but think the Squaw Peak flags started going up after 9/11.

If you are new to the state you will find out that AZ has hundreds of legends. All are fun to hear about while camping or hiking. There is a book about it but I cant remember te name. Anyone else know it?
