I havn't seen anyone else mention this. Tortilla Flat has developed an overflow parking lot just southeast of town. Hikers can use this lot. Follow the stone road to the right on the east side of town by the museum. At the rear of the lot, by an unmarked trailhead you can use to go to Peters Cave, there is a sign asking you to fill out a permit for overnight parking so they don't bother or tow your car. No charge-just place it on your dash so they know its not abandoned. A nice jesture.
Its private property, not subject to ticket by the forest police

Is this for real? With all the dire warnings, I hardly leave my car long enough to finish my ice cream cone (man, those taste great after a few days on the trail). I also enjoy serving as a benchmark for those hoping to be less filthy than somebody.

When we came walking through the town (ok, walking down the highway) after a couple rain soaked days there were people standing (all warm and dry, I might add...) on the porch of the resteraunt who were actually pointing and speaking quickly and quietly, apparently in some kind of haze of suprise, confusion, and dismay that we might have been out walking in the rain. I kind of wished I was on the porch snickering too...
