Saltriverman,

You are probably an avid hiker which is why you are on this site. Have you ever hiked the mountain? How difficult is it, It looks rather steep from all angles?

What would be the best way to get permission to hike Red Mountain? Is it likely permission would be granted, or is it like asking to see the gold inside Fort Knox? Would you be willing to lead a group hike sometime in the next few years so that the group could have the proper representative, assuming that we could get permission from the community?

Most of them call themselves Indians, and/or refer to themselves by their tribal affiliation. Some of the Zunis near where I live say they dislike the term "Native Americans" because to them the word "natives" brings up images of backward, naked people in National Geographic, etc! This seems pretty amusing to me, but to them I guess it's not! However I can't speak for the Pimas, or others--they may prefer the Native American term.

I agree with asking permission first, then going elsewhere if it's not granted. It used to be you couldn't summit Mt. Baldy, but in the past 3 years you can go to the so-called White Man's summit without any problems. They took down all the big signs--I guess they came to see they could have the higher point for their use, let us enjoy the slightly lower point.

For reference sake: The Pima and the other O'odham refer to themselves as: "American Indian"...

Ressurecting this thread seems like the appropriate place to bring this up. I noticed that this is going to happen in April 2013, and at the Ft. McDowell Casino Resort.

Somehow it seems to me a little hypocritical that they want to bring in business to their casino based on trail interest in the area, but they won't build or open a trail to the closest and most prominent summit that would draw a lot of interest. I guess in the end they only hurt themselves.

Sure glad I got to climb that red devil back in the late 60s. Took me and my friend a couple of tries to get it done. Beautiful peak to say the least!

I heard that no one, even tribal members, are allowed to hike Red Mountain. You can ask, but I doubt that you'd be granted permission.
