I was in that group; looked like someone had dragged a nearby log into the fire ring and just pulled it out when they left and of course it was still smouldering, A couple of weeks or so earlier when GTG, Fritzski and I did the Reavis Ranch hike we came across a smouldering campfire then as well. Two hikes, two campfires left smouldering doesn't bode well. As much as I wanted to do the Mt. Humphrey hike, think it's really the wisest move to close the forests before the holiday weekend. Too many folks who just know no better out there tossing cigarettes, firecrackers etc around all that dry forest scares the hell outta me.ck1 wrote:Along those same lines...when the HAZ group hiked Rogers Canyon, they reported putting out a still smoldering campfire...

Bottom line. The land needs closed to protect the forests. I would rather suffer for a few months than have to hike in a burnt forest for the next 20 years. Do you all remember fourpeaks? Once a beautiful oasis in the desert, now just a charred tinderbox. And how about the rim above Payson. Remember the Dude fire? I charred some of my favorite area in the state. The problem is idiots don't realize what they are doing. I just hope we come out of this summer with minimal fire damage.

Talked to the Safford Ranger District on Friday and they will be closing down areas of the Coronado on the 31st.
Not sure why they are waiting until AFTER Memorial day, but that seems to be the current plan. I am not sure if this means all of the Coronado, as the ranger and I were discussing the Pinalenos area, so make sure and give them a call if you are thinking of heading south.
