Phoenix Haters

Post by JimmineyGrl »

A friend of mine emailed me this inflamitory article about Phoenix posted on a Philadelphia website. It was written due to the fact that we make take their place as the fifth largest city in the nation.

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/6262456.htm

Any thoughts?

It wouldn't bother me if they took half of the Phoenix population and gave them free homes so they could regain their "status". I was born in Mesa, when there was a gap between Mesa and Apache Jct. Mesa ended at Stapley. Chandler was mostly grain fields, beyond 47th avenue was all cotton, I had to jump ditches and sneak thru cotton fields to get to Webster grade school east of Alma School. Gilbert was a collection of ranches and farms and there was only 2 roads. People could actually walk outside at night and not worry about getting killed.......
I Could have bought the corner of Thomas and Central for $10,000 but thought it was too expensive :( If Philly wants to be a huge city, let them have it, along with all the crime, gangs, drugs, and other things that go along with it. People move to Phoenix, then don't like it, then they move up to Prescott, or Flagstaff or Sedona or or or and bring their big city ways with them.......go home!!! I like being a country bumpkin!!!!!!! Let them keep printing their articles, it will make less people want to come here!!! Maybe they should print something about the wild and crazy, beer drinking, walking stick carrying, "hiker gangs" to keep 'em out of the hills and give the rescue teams a break.

ONO!! New member!! :o

I had met Ladmo on a few occasions. I was on the show in 5th grade. My teacher worked on the set during the summer so we got to go on the halloween showing. The whole class dressed up. Ladmo was at a company picnic right before he died. He was a great and kind man. I wish my kids could have watched their show.

Hmmm ok all, I'm a new Phoenix resident as of the end-of-February. YOU are stuck with me so there! I love it here.

I'm not sure if this forum is turning into a reminiscing one or not, but I'm not going to take offense by some of the opinions here. :? I've met alot of you and never got the impression you wanted me to go home.

Ironic part is, I'm the "Welcome Wagon" person for the 1st Annual HAZ bbq! :D and Proud of it!

I wish I was a native of here, I know I missed out on alot of nice times and wonderful people you are talking about. But I hope my future grandchildren will have the benefit of what you are reminiscing about. My daughter will be a teacher here and I feel she will have alot to offer Arizona. And you may even say "Stay!!"

I have yet to meet anyone since I've lived here that I didn't like, hope the feeling is mutual.

Hey Sheri...I'm guessing they are not talking about the "individual" but are making reference to the "masses"(I think the latest number is +/- 8000 new residents a month to AZ?). I've only been here a couple of years and I've seen plenty of room for improvement! Some of that improvement will come from "new comers" that actually care about their surroundings...like you! :D

Census of Maricopa County, Year 2000: 3.1 million; Year 2010: 4.15m; Year 2020: 5.2; Year 2030: 6.25; Year 2040:7.33

This means that by 2040, there will be no one left in Philly, and it'll be a wilderness again, Penn's Woods.....

(We could only hope....) -R

ps- I won't even touch Gary IN....grew up 40 miles east of there, drove thru at 70 on the tollroad, rolled up and locked.....

Sherri........wayyyyyyy back when the Valley of the sun was still ....hmmmmmmm small.......there wasn't any cable tv.....no sattelite tv...and we only had 4 tv stations, and if your antennae wasn't aimed right you could only get 3 of those......Wallace and Ladmo were dedicated to children in every sense of the word. That was the hightlight of the day for most of us kids, that and the original Candid Camera, there just weren't any shows geared around kids. Wallace and Ladmo's entire audience was children, they took them on stage...played games, gave them Ladmo Bags, which contained small toys, candy etc, maybe ticket to a movie, (which at the time cost .25 to go to).....They had benefits for children, played the state fair...and they were basically kids themselves who just never grew up..........I believe Pat McMann (Gerald) is the last of the surviving team.......

Hoppy47: I know I would have loved this show! I use to watch Shari Lewis and Lambchop all the time. I was too young for Howdy Doody show but my brothers watched that so I know a little of that show. I watched Garfield Goose. UGH! I'm really dating myself ey?? I think these are comparable for my age group (48 years old, 1955) and what was on tv where I grew up. Mind you, I grew up in a small town in NW Indiana, it's still a town with a volunteer fire dept, but we had the benefit of Chicago stations. OHHH we also had Bozo Circus. That was really cool, over the years they had to replace BOZO with a new person, it was a long running show, I believe it just went of the air about 10 years ago, WGN Chicago station.

Randy: Where did you go up? I grew up in Griffith, then moved to Portage for 25 years til now. It had to be fairly close to my area. Small world :) And yes, Gary is unfortunately a city that slowly decaded over the years, but they are trying to revive it. Miss America pagent and casinos. Is this a good thing? lol I was always disappointed they didn't do something more with the Indiana Dunes instead of casino boats *sigh*. There's still the last electric train, the South Shore. And some say there's only CORN in Indiana.

But back to Phoenix, I feel like this is Emerald city. Love it! I do not want to click my heels to go back!

In response to Marlee's reply:
I totally agree with you. I've lived here for three years and don't miss the craziness of Southern California. I hope more articles like this come out. I thought the heat would keep the riff-raff out, but maybe we need a little help from the City of Brotherly Love.

you guys remember Fireman Bob who would frequent the show in the later years?
my neighborhood buddy Barnie (not even sure that was his real name, think it was Benjamin or something) and I met him when we were about 10-11 years old because Fireman Bob was dating Barney's mom. I was almost on the show, but didnt go for it while my cousin Chris from North Carolina did go. However, I was on a show called the "Uncle Owl Show" back in Cincinnati when I was 5. Very similar to W&L and those from Cinci might remember.

How about the Lew King show and the Lew King rangers?? Now that goes back a ways to. Wayne Newton was a frequent guest on his show.

Interesting... when I moved to the valley in '86 people often referred to the good ol' days of Wallace and Ladmo. I can't believe this is the first I've heard of "Legend City". Appears to have been here http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?L ... =16&M=5&G=

So much for the other articles... all gone now. Main reason I dislike off-site linking : rambo :
