Storm Over Everest

There was an episode of PBS's Frontline last night about the tragedy on Everest in '96. It looked like David Breshears was doing most of the narration, but I didn't get a chance to finish watching (That's what TiVo's for, right?) At any rate, it's available for online viewing on the Frontline website. Go to PBS org and click on Programs > Frontline or google: "Storm Over Everest"...

I was "totally glued" to it last night for the 1.5 hour PBS-Frontline showing!!

I think I will always remember what that one guy who was left for dead, stated:
"character is who you are when no one else is around"..

Exactly. And as Hank points out he coined a phrase on personal ethics that's stuck with me for some time;

"Character is who you are when no one else is around..."

Just to be correct, I may have misstated Dr. Weathers on his personal ethics statement. He may have actually stated:

"Character is who you are when no one else is looking"

Yea, that's really a true statement. Although everyone could probably think of a time when they were faced with a crisis a statement like that describes, certainly few will ever truly know what he meant when he said it.

If memory serves, he essentially "woke up" and started walking towards camp did he not? Imagine the fortitude that took...

Actually this Dr. Weathers' statement was in response to an incident that was described by him in this "Storm Over Everest" episode that he felt very strongly about, that prompted this personal ethics statement.

Well, I finally got to watch the rest of the show. Pretty powerful stuff. I also liked the line: "The mountain does not compete with us."
