Howdy everyone,
History seems to have graced the Superstitions with an embarrassment of riches when it comes to names for the various features. But I am struggling to get them sorted out.
I thought I was in La Barge Canyon while hiking north/south along the eastern side of Battleship Mountain. However when subsequently looking at Google Map, I saw a canyon about 1 mile northwest of Second Water Spring that is named La Barge Canyon. No way these are both continuations of the same geologic feature. Will the real La Barge Canyon please stand up.
Anybody know whether there really are two canyons of the same name or else what names may be more appropriate.
Thanks much,
Bill

Re: La Barge Canyon name confusion
LaBarge empties into Canyon Lake.
Google map must have an inaccuracy. I mile NW of Second Water Spring is a small canyon of little consequence, formed by the northern slopes of Hackberry Mesa.
I'll have to search Google map to see what the issue is.
Joe will pro'lly sort this out for us.

You were in the right canyon. The later looks like a misprint. It's not even labeling the canyon, it's really on the northern tip of Hackberry Mesa. I've seen that canyon from above on Peak 2881. You can access it from the day-use picnic area before the marina. It runs up to Cholla Tank on Hackberry, might be interesting.formertexan wrote:I thought I was in La Barge Canyon while hiking north/south along the eastern side of Battleship Mountain. Some of the older maps list Superstition (SE) Peak 5057 as La Barge too, which is way off.

Yeah, Google Earth/Maps labels on geographic features aren't always spot on, I've noticed.

Thank you everyone for the clarification. And particularly for the Google caveats.
