New HAZ member question.
I'm looking for help in finding a day hike (+-10mi.?). Preferrably in a cooler part of the state. With all the NF closures, it can't seem to find a trail that is open.....Looking to go at the end of June.
Thanks in advance for any responses posted.
Mark

Welcome to HAZ Mark!
It kinda bites doesn't it! If you're looking for "cool" weather I think you'll need to go a long ways, like the White Mountains. San Jacinto above Palm Springs is almost closer...
Is that a bad thing for me to plug California on an Arizona site 8O but it's not like I said Big Bear

Hey Mark, and welcome to HAZ-
I just spoke to the Alpine Ranger District office in Alpine, AZ who administers the areas around there in the Apache/Sitgreaves NF. Although the trails and Forest Service roads are closed right around Alpine (as they are pretty much everywhere in AZ) the trails south of Alpine and around Nutrioso are still open. It's quite a drive up there, 4 to 5 hours depending on how you drive, but it's really pretty. The ranger was whining about how hot it is there today, 82F, but for us lizards here it'd be a nice change. Good luck.

North Rim
We haven't checked El Net but it would seem likely that the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is open even if the North Kaibab Nat'l Forest is not.
We dunno. Is the North Rim still open? Anyway, if it is, it's a sure thing for nice cool hiking. And they even have real decent public showers there, too! Just a thought
