Humphreys inner basin

Post by kgmolson »

I was able to tackle the summit trail in 5hrs. How much longer can I expect the inner basin trail to take... about 7 total?

is it harder because it is longer? Or is the trail a bit steeper?

It's uphill the entire way and 2 miles longer each direction, so it can't be any steeper, just longer. When we hiked it, it took eleven hours, but that was with several long breaks (the two I hiked it with weren't super avid hikers, and certainly weren't used to that sort of distance) and some really bad hail. The way down took us about as long as the way up because of the hail. Up took 6 hours, probably should have taken 3 to get down but instead took 5. On my own and without hail I probably would have done it in about 8. Careful of mountain lions :scared: I heard one and it more than likely was aware of my presence as well... Assuming you're in better shape than I, you could probably complete the hike in 7, but I would allow 9-10, just in case. It sucks hiking when hail is pounding on your face.

Judging by the elevation profiles on my Flagstaff Trails Map, I'd say the Inner Basin is slightly less steep. But you still have to take into account little section on the Weatherford and that last steep section on Humphrey's.
