Fall colors

Post by jivens »

This site used to have a really neat search feature whereby you could search for great fall color hikes. It seems to be gone, or it is buried in a place where I can't find it.
Could someone please let me know if this still exists, and if so, how to use it? And if it is gone, and you are a site moderator, please add it back in...

I am planning ahead for good fall hikes this year. Any suggestions would be welcome... particularly any hike like The West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon..

I agree, I've been thinking fall hikes for a while now, too. I'm guessing the fall color feature will pop up once fall gets closer, but until then, checking the elevation and flora profiles of a hike will tell you most of what you need to know, as well as pictures submitted by members.

Starting this year we're moving to a new system for foliage. It will be reported by members in their triplogs as we did with spring wildflowers. Over six hundred trips were logged with a wildflower status! Once a few years of data is overlapped this will be a mighty powerful feature overlaid on TrailDEX Map and other indexes.

Here's the old foliage compilation http://hikearizona.com/Foliage.php with a whopping 52 ish hikes after eleven years. Please throw a bone back jivens... year and a half member with zero trips logged ;)

West Fork (of the Little Colorado) Trail #94 off Osborne Rd. in Greer is nice. It takes you right out of the village all the way to the Baldy Trailhead--about 6 miles one way. The aspens, if you catch them at the right time, usually in October, are just fabulous. And it's not crowded.

Just when I think I've seen just about everything this site has to offer, you surprise me with some other cool hidden feature! I hadn't seen this before in any of the navigation

Hit in the Inner Basin this weekend, fall colors aren't quite in full effect but they're gettin' there! Backside of the Peaks (Abineau/Bear Jaw) is probably in full effect, another good option!

Not in full effect in White Mtns. yet either, although if you want to bushwhack up the steep north slope of Escudilla from FR 275 you can be in a grove that's turning now. We can see them from Springerville and other areas around here.

Last year you could find some good groves starting in early October.

I'm thinking of hitting Horton Creek in the next couple of weeks and the "fall colors" on the forest service site have not been much help. Anyone know when the best time to his that trail and get the most fall foliage? Are there any other trails in that region that are just as good?

Look at photosets under Horton Creek for an estimate on prime dates. See Canyon Hike is another popular autumn hike in that area. They're probably a couple weeks off. If you can get off the "trail" kick simply drive up the forest roads towards Bear Lake, park anywhere and just start hiking out in the woods.

Weatherford Canyon is looking good! It's still got a couple weeks of color left, by my estimate. I'm planning for Abineau/Bear Jaw tomorrow morning.

The aspens on the south face of the Peaks are just starting to change. The cold this weekend will likley accelerate the change and lower the elevations down to 8000' and Schultz Tank. This coming week and next weekend may be the peak week of fall color on the south face.

The Kaibab (the forest, not the trail), especially towards the N. Rim is gorgeous right now, but this snow storm that's predicted for the area might do it all in this weekend. We've already had some serious wind... :(

If you're looking into Abineau, do it TOMORROW. The peak is right NOW!

Dress for cold! It was 11 degrees for the low in Flag this morning. Its not supposed to break 50 in town, so only high 30s up there. with wind. Might be worth it though, since that hike has a lot of aspen.
