Need a break from the heat . . .

Post by Newbie hiker »

Hi! This is my first summer in Arizona and I'm pretty desperate to get to a swimming hole to cool off. Is anyone interested in hiking to one of the easier destinations listed in the swimming section in the next few weeks? Maybe something like Cibecue Creek? (But I'm open to other ideas.)

It should be noted that while I am anxious and enthusiastic about hiking, I am a newbie and my trail-finding abilities are abyssmal. An easy or moderate hike is probably all I'm up for at this point.

Oh it's an easy one day thing.
The hike is short.
The drive is fab too, in my opinion.

OK, I'm 90% sure I'm in. Will there be very much water in Cibeque, considering this years watershed? If there's only going to be a dribble, is it worth it? Looks to me like a lot of the excitement of this hike is water. Just let me know when and where to meet. Not sure if I want to drive on that road, rumored to be treacherous, in my nosuspension, lightweight, slidearound S-10. If possible would like to hitch a ride in a narrow 4x4 or maybe a little fourbanger! My wife is deciding if she wants to go or no.

I just saw that on the news. They had a satellite picture which shows the smoke from the fire. I'm bagging it. They said it was near Cibecue and that it was heading to a creek. I guess I'll stay in town this weekend....maybe look for a class in rain dancing! :?

The town of Cibecue is 17 air miles north of Cibecue Creek. The Rodeo Fire is NE of Cibecue which puts it 20 miles away over near Carrizo Creek I believe. I don't think there's much to even burn down in the Salt River where you'd be heading. You guys could always call, just ask "Is lower Cibecue Creek off the Salt still open to hiking"

Just called the White Mountain Apache Tribe and they said that the area is open for hiking. Is anyone else up for it?

I am DEFINITELY up for it. My husband is busy all day Saturday and I'd be home by myself, so it sounds like a good time to see something new and make some new friends. Who else is up for this?

This is still a last minute call for me. If I were to go I would need to hitch a ride with someone from wherever we meet as I have my son's car (shall we call it that?) this weekend. Is that possible?

Cindy, if I'm driving I'd be glad to give you a ride.

However, it sure would be nice to have someone with a 4x4. Any other takers?

I have an S-10 that will accomadate three max. Only problem is it has no air conditioning. Newbie has a sedan. Kristyn has a four banger. Kristyn, you out there? azhiker96 has a narrow 4x4. azhiker, is it still in the bag? Kelly are you interested?

This hike will be a great way to beat the heat. Just look at this guy diving into this cool blue pool. I'm ready to cross the creek in such a fashion if you catch my drift. Let's do it!

Yeah that's looking pretty bad with all the evacuations.

Dang, last I looked it was 300 acres, now it's 50,000+

With all the resources out in Colo & Cali and those planes downed due to the crash... add in the high winds expected friday. This is looking to be really bad!

I remember the humidity here in Phx yesterday was 3%

I can't hike yet but I would be delighted to drive a few folks to the trailhead. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and room for 4 passengers with their gear. I could use a day in the sun, even if its just reading a book.

Let me know if you can use my help/

I believe the fire is moving away from the canyon (toward Show Low) and is some distance away. When I called yesterday access was still open. I have tried to call today but keep getting a message that all circuits are busy now. Will keep trying.

Thanks for that offer Snick. You are a very kind and generous man. It will probably work out perfect if this hike is kept alive. I live close to you at about 69th Ave and Bell. Maybe we could loop around the 101 to 10 to 60(or whatever) picking others up along the way.

Sorry guys, I'm not gonna be able to make this one. I have 4 apple trees whose limbs are breaking due to the apples that are baking on the trees. I can't seem to keep up but today I bought a couple gadgets to help and will be up to my elbows in applesauce all morning.

I hope you'll all want to go back someday, especially if the creek looks like the pictures, ohhhhhh lala.

Have fun, be safe!
