Voluntary Recall
On January 19, 2009, we announced a voluntary recall of 14 U.S and 4 Canadian products including CLIF Bar, CLIF Builder’s, CLIF MOJO, CLIF Kid Organic ZBaR and LUNA Bar, in the U.S. and Canada because the peanut butter in those products was sourced, for a limited period of time, from the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is a manufacturer and supplier of peanut butter for many food companies and manufacturers.
PCA is under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter. In light of this investigation, and with an abundance of caution, Clif Bar & Company has enacted a voluntary recall. We take the health and safety of our consumers very seriously.

Re: Clif & Luna Bar Recall
Man, I ate two boxes of regular Cliff Bars, and one box of the builder bars (all of them the peanut butter kind) in the last month. Oh well, apart from being completely exhausted this week, I feel fine ;) Very long week at the paper mill...

Re: Clif & Luna Bar Recall
I ate two of recalled bars on 1/1. I'm still kicking. Mrs. big_load is trying to talk me out of eating the other two I still have. I've also eaten several of the other recalled products. There's quite likely some bad stuff out there, but surely not everything that company produced in the time frame is equally affected. Until they narrow the source within their production line, it's hard to know what the real risk is.

I don't get too worried about any of these recalls, after all, it's kind of like playing the lottery...except your reward for being that one in a million sorta sucks!
I've had food poisoning once, it was more like a 6 hour accelerated flu than anything else. Apart from being dehydrated and tired the next day, I was fine - of course your experience may vary.

Same here; bad mayonnaise knocked a lot of folks out at a campus event years and years ago. I barfed for a few hours and was feverish for a while and just basically had to rehydrate. A few folks ended up being hospitalized, however...Strand wrote:I don't get too worried about any of these recalls, after all, it's kind of like playing the lottery...except your reward for being that one in a million sorta sucks!

Re: Clif & Luna Bar Recall
Some people will argue this point, but it seems to me that the reason I've managed to avoid getting sick several times when I ate the same thing as those around me who got violently ill, is because of how I grew up. I lived in farm country, and my parents doctor avoided giving us antibiotics except in very rare cases. Seems like people who take meds for everything under the sun, and who pop an antibiotic at the first sign of a scratch, are the ones who are always sick.

Re: Clif & Luna Bar Recall
When I get sick I simply hike harder and flush it out of the system. I totally agree if you're not exposed to some germs in life you're body is left with a week defense.
I wouldn't screw around with Salmonella though, if it doesn't kill ya you'll be wishing it. I think food poising on the other hand is when your body disagrees with something you ate and stops digesting. The acids build up in your stomach and you uncontrollably projectile heave at jet speed. It's usually over in six to twelve hours at which point you can't believe you feel normal again.

Re: Clif & Luna Bar Recall
Did a little research on the web health sites (Mayo, webMD). Confirms what I had been told by family (mom and brother are both microbiologists).
Basically is says the cause can be bacterial (ecoli, salmonella, etc), viral, or parasitic. Your reaction is dependent on how much you consumed (and kept down), and your immune system. Salmonella or ecoli can cause short term violent illness and you may experience a fairly quick recovery, or if your system is weak - long term recurring issues if the infection lingers.
Had a buddy that had the extreme version. He drank from a spring he'd been using on hunting trips for quite some time (he's over 50 and hunted there for decades) but being a rugged Utah/AZ native didn't filter the water. He came down with a massive case of giardia. He lost 25 lbs in about 12 days, but is doing well now. That was a wake up call for a lot of the locals who'd done the same thing for years.

Re: Clif & Luna Bar Recall
I totally agree. I was always the kid getting myself dirty and eating bugs and dirt and such. Everytime I ever get sick it's for like 36 hours max because my immune system is used to being put through it's paces. Heck usually when I cut myself or scrape myself (especially back when I skated) I would just suck any excess blood away (I like the taste of bloodStrand wrote:Some people will argue this point, but it seems to me that the reason I've managed to avoid getting sick several times when I ate the same thing as those around me who got violently ill, is because of how I grew up. But ya you need to keep your immune system up to snuff and not just rely solely on drugs. I mean put it this way. You have two cavemen. One is fit because of always being out on the hunt. Then you have the other caveman that just sits there and doesn't have to do any work usually and is kinda fat and out of shape. One day these two cavemen are out walking and along comes a sabertooth looking for a snack. Which caveman do you think would escape the sabertooth? Basically your immune system is like a muscle....goto build it up strong if you expect it to pull its load and fight off the serious stuff.
