Malpais Peak, El Capitan Canyon

Post by nonot »

Has anyone tried to get to the top, the closest I could find is rumors Joe got close in some of his Geronimo Head trip reports??

Also, anyone has any specific info about El Capitan narrows?

I'm digging for info for upcoming trip(s). Thanks!

You can find technical information about El Capitan in the new Todd Martin book, Arizona: Technical Canyoneering.
Here's the basics:
ACA Rating: 3A I
Physical Difficulty: Strenuous
Time Needed: 2-5 Hours
Maps: USGS El Capitan Mountain 7.5
Distance: 3.0 miles
The book has driving directions and trip description. It looks like there are 3 rappels; a 10, 50 and 15 footer.

Some cavers from Tucson went thru there a while back. Some chose to climb around and got cliffed out, had to use a rope anyway. Neat canyon from what I have seen. HIking wise took a Jeep trail south of there up then ridgewalked the limestone in the mescals and up toward El Cap. All I recall is great views and it was hot as hades at the time.

It's pretty easy to attain once you've conquered Geronimo, just a very long day. Anybody that wants to do this on either a Wed or Sun lemme know, I'm dying to kick it out already.

I was trying to do what you just did Joe, but I have no idea how to use the TrailDEX Map. Maybe it's just slow? Or maybe I'm slow....

Wow, thanks Joe, I misread the post and thought El Capitan was a canyon on top of Malapais somewhere :?

I might actually be up for a Malapais hike some Sunday in the next month or 2. I've really been wanting to get up top and have a look around :D
