Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography

Smithsonian Photography Exhibit Debuts at Phoenix Public Library - January 2009

Phoenix Public Library will host the national debut of “Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography,” Jan. 10 - March 29 at Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave.

Admission is free.

The exhibit features 60 photographs by well-known photographers, including Jack Dykinga, Michael Collier, Mike Buchheit, James Cowlin and Sue Bennett. Covering nearly 125 years of photographic history, the exhibit includes images of early photographers dangling from cables with their cumbersome equipment balanced on their shoulders to more recent dramatic images featuring the canyon’s startling natural beauty.

Three free programs with featured photographers complement the exhibit:

Yeah, I'm super bummed about Dykinga talking on Wednesday. That guy is such an amazing photographer and I worship his work, and I've got to work Wednesday evening. He has a couple shots that make me completely giddy, particularly one of a blooming saguaro, where he uses the arm of the saguaro in the foreground to frame another one in the background. Another favorite of mine is his shot of a slot canyon in the Grand Canyon with a twisted piece of flood debris in the foreground. So good. He does some amazing things with leading lines.

Google "Jack Dykinga Scenic Store" and follow the first link for a lot of his really good images. His site has a portfolio, but the images aren't compressed very well, and the scenic store seems to give sharper examples.

Though I'm not a huge Dykinga fan it was a nice presentation.

Joe- I'm not judging- I know we all have our own tastes- but is there any particular reason you aren't a Dykinga fan? Or are you just generally not fond of his style of photography.

It doesn't draw me in or leave me in awe. On the other hand he throws a mean presentation. I can see what thrives him now.

He would be a great comedian. We were looking at this dark moody shot of the canyon with a short streak of lightning in the background. While he's explaining it somebody bumped the lights on in the room and without hesitation he added something to the effect "this is exactly how it was, there was flashes of lightning through the canyon"

This segment was very enjoyable. Great perspective photography from an honest down to earth guy.

I knew it was "Teva Joe" the minute he sat down in the front row, but I couldn't say "hi" until it was over. ;)

Great "bird's-eye" perspective from an impressive character. Not a lot about the Grand Canyon, but a fascinating presentation on Geology. Really made geology interesting. I bought his Rivers book.
He and Boyce were river guides with AZ Raft Adventures AZRA - the company I'm rafting with in May.
