Hiking in Zion

Post by Tough_Boots »

I'm going up to Zion in a couple weeks with visiting family and will probably need to get away from them at one point. Does anyone know of a good hike up there? The trails listed on Zion's website all look pretty short and I'd like to do day hike between 5 and 10 miles.

West Rim Trail. East Rim Trail. Wildcat Trail. The trail into Kolob Arch. All those are pretty good length.

Yup, 5 miles with some good elevation gain. It's listed on here too.

Observation point was nice. I would like to do the West rim trail one day.

I did the West Rim last year. It was definitely a strenuous hike, but massively enjoyable. I don't think I would like it too much if I knew I had to hike back down once I got to the top. Perhaps with just a daypack, I would be saying otherwise, but I liked hiking knowing my destination was the top. The hike up took most of the day, the hike down was only a couple of hours.

Angel's Landing was cool though and very doable.

Get a permit for the Subway. Just rent a wetsuit or drysuit if you go that route. That water is COLD!!! And Observation Point is a sweet hike IMO.

when i went there in march a year ago i stayed in the campground and did some day hikes. one day i went up the kolob terrace rd and checked out wildcat caynon, it was snow up there so i didn't get far due to post holeing but i followed some trails to some nice look outs. another day i went down to the subway, this was the none technical route, it wasn't that awsome, easy with a great reward of cascade water falls and the subway is very cool.

i also stopped in at a bike shop in town south of the park and took a shower there, the guys there were a big help they will defiently point you in the right directions for what you are looking for. they showed me keyhole caynon, it is very narrow and on the other side of the tunnel, the opening for this is not to noticable but you can find it, it is short narrow and cold with some repels, but worth it. he also talked about another one that started at the top of the tunnel area and took you down to the valley floor area, it sounded great, but there is a 100 ft repel so you would need two ropes.

Keyhole is fun but only takes 1-2 hours.

The second one is Pine Creek, bring someone who knows what they're doing, a female ranger nearly died last fall on the last rap when she clipped into the wrong side of her block.

I still want to do subway
