Arizona bear attempting home break-ins killed by police
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Kingman police officers have shot and killed a bear that wandered into town and tried to break into several homes and the local post office.
Police spokesman Sgt. Bob Fisk says the black bear was spotted on Thursday morning by residents and the police switchboard was soon flooded with calls.
Officers spotted the young bruin as it tried to break into a window at the post office, then tracked it as it went through alleys, climbed fences and tried to get into several homes. Fisk says the bear was very aggressive and was seen pushing on a home’s door.
Residents gathered to watch, and a police captain ordered officers to shoot it because of the danger to people. After being hit, the bear ran but was pinned in by a police cruiser before dying.

It must have been an escaped Jersey bear. They're big on home invasions.

How does a wild bear know about doors? I think there's more to this story than we're getting.

There are a # of cabins near the top of the Hualapais, and it's possible that the bear learned an easy way to get food by getting into them. However, if a building has food in it that the bear can smell the smell would most likely be coming through the cracks between the door and the frame so it would stand to reason that the bear would (in its mind) try to follow the smell to the source.

I know a fellow who used to work on the North Slope in Alaska. He's got a picture of a polar bear literally climbing in his office window.

I tease him that the photo isn't very well framed and is out of focus.
