Los Dos Molinos in Phoenix is very good but I won't go there. We used to go when I was really young and it was great, and then then went again a couple years ago. This time the food was way overpriced and they charged for every additional basket of chips after the first. No chance I'm going to do that. Now I live right next to an Arribas. The menu is gigantic and a lot of the dishes are quality and some really hot (much more-so than any other local chain), not to mention lightning fast service and $.99 margaritas before 6 PM. For you purists I'm sure it's not real Mexican or something, but without the motivation to research the local secrets, it's the best for my money. Did I mention $.99 margaritas before 6PM?

My favorite place to go is also sort of Americanized. It's Salsa Brava in Flag, on east Rt. 66. I haven't been there for a couple of years, but last time we went we ordered guacamole as an appetizer. It was $5 and it was HUGE and really really good! I have been to other restaurants and ordered guacamole, paid $5 and got this teensy dab of green-dyed stuff in a paper cup.

Salsa Brava has a salsa bar, with an amazing variety of salsas. Their ad says they are consistently voted best Mexican restaurant in Flag. It is pretty good, anyway. I actually have never tried a margarita before but they do serve them there and I've heard they are good. (You don't want me to try one as I will fall asleep at the table in about 5 minutes.) (Or on the other hand, maybe you WOULD want me to fall asleep! ;) )

Next time you're in Salt Lake, try Red Iguana. It's on North Temple, on the way in from the airport. Not the toniest atmosphere in the world, but wonderful authentic homemade fresh food, including their own special mole sauce, which is to die for. Don't even think about it at rush hour, though. The place is packed and the line goes outside and down the sidewalk.

And the last time I was there ... merciful heaven ... they didn't have stereotypical Mexican music blaring in your ear! You can sit and eat and converse in peace.

i like Salsa Brava too. I used to eat there a few times when i lived in Flag -
most places that have margarita specials will make one "by hand" at no extra charge.. that means they dont use the dyed green funk in a bottle but simply squeeze lime juice into a cup, add rock ice, and stir.
to get real tequila however, you'll have to pay extra! just ask Al.

Don't know if I've seen the 99-cent margaritas at Arribas, but I'm partial to the $3 pint of their own microbrewed bock beer, house-made corn chips with hatch chilli salsa. Don't think I've made it beyond those menu items... :sl:

This thread leads to a HAZ site development suggestion. Should we (I use that term loosely knowing it's all more work for Joe) have a section where we identify and rate eateries around the state for post hike repast? Without thinking it through very much, seems it could follow the format of the hikes.

This thread may overtake 'Nude Hiking' in terms of longevity.

The Rock Springs Cafe (just off of the I-17 in Rock Springs north of Anthem) rocks. Where else are you 100% justified in enjoying a slice of pie after breakfast?

Mike and Rhonda's in Flagstaff is great.

Also love Bun Hugger's in Flagstaff. There's no place better after rafting down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon: a greasy, gorgeous burger along with a cold one (or four).

I recently enjoyed El Rancho in Payson on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. I didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised. They do it old-school in terms of coating every meal with a 1/2 pound of melted cheese, but what really surprised me was their machaca. Machaca in this state is typically shredded beef with seasoning. El Rancho's variation has a nice smoky taste to it, and I loved it.

Murphy's in Prescott is nice if you're staying in town. Prime rib and an awesome selection of beers.

I previously mentioned Rigo's in Tucson, and I've recently been dreaming of their lunch buffet. One would think that a Mexican food restaurant in South Tucson would have a nasty buffet, but Rigo's is awesome. Where else can you enjoy all-you-can-eat nopalitas (prickly pear cactus pieces in enchilada sauce)? If you have an appetite like mine, order the 'Mucho Very Good': a carne asada chimichanga prepared enchilada-style. It's gigantic, and you'd better hope that you're not driving.

Or not sharing a tent with someone...

Just grabbed a burro at Maico last night - in Tucson on 22nd near Park. Just a little taco stand, really, but the people there are the best and always work hard to make sure you've got a big heap of good eats. Now they've got ceviche! mmmmmmmmmm

Anyone know the name of the BBQ place that is run out of the old train car in Wilcox along the road to the Chiricahuas? THAT was some good noms!

So long as we're not just talking about Mexican food or Globe anymore, I'm going to recommend Bill's Pizza in Presott. Start off your evening with some of the best pizza you'll ever eat (I'll recommend the sweet and hot italian sausage) and a Hefeweizen, then finish it off down the street at Whiskey Row.

really? drink whatever you want, mate, but id say with sausage a good pairing would be Spaten Optimator instead of a wheat ale - finish it off with some good, dark chocolate. ymmv.

For Mexican in the valley there's no beating Dick's Hideaway (New-Mexican actually ... which is the style of Arriba's as well). Plus, the atmosphere is unparalleled. I'll take a burger from Four Peaks any day, one of the best around, and ironically, I'll take the beer selection at Delux Burger. Plus their bartenders really know their beers. (2nd choice is Papago Brewing which also has a cooler that you can buy by the bottle. Their selection is almost as good as Tops, which since its a bar, and not a liquor store, is pretty good). The Roosevelt has the best tomato soup in the valley (and the accompanying grilled cheese is top 5). Roaring Fork has the best green chile mac n' cheese ever made. Eat in the bar at happy hour and you can afford it without a gold card.

Maybe Joe could combine the threads. People could debate whether it is moral to eat beans after hiking nude. Or, for the "anti" group: Which is the best margarita to drink to help me forget what I saw out there on the trail today?

On our way back from Aravaipa Te-Wa and I wanted to eat at one of the Mexican food restaurants in Superior. We both remembered this forum discussion but couldn't remember the name of the restaurants. So we stopped at the Circle-K and I asked the clerk what his favorite Mexican resatuarant was and he said Los Hermanos.

Good choice. It indeed was cheap and delicious! It was around 3 and the place was hopping! Plus if you have any strength left after a hike, you can go next door to the attached bar and play some pool.

The waitress seemed to like Te-Wa. It was amusing when she came for our order and he said "#1" and she says, "Ladies First" and bonked him on the hand with the menu ;) and then asked me for my order, ha! She was quite a stitch and Te-wa and she engaged in some short conversations, "like why do you have 5 pens attached to your apron?"
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
