FR 300-Mogollon Rim

Post by chikkutom »

Hi,

I am planning on doing this trip this coming Saturday. I am just looking to do some scenic drive with some good photo ops. Does anyone know any good photo op places in this road? I notice that there are a lot of small FR roads that lead to streams and some good views. Does anyone know any of the good branching FR roads? Any short well worth hikes should be fine also.

Thanks for the help!

There are some nice vistas off of FR 9350 (should be a crowded area this weekend as it's a forest camping area).
There are some neat vistas right about the intersection of FR 300 and FR 295. There's a small parking area (might be muddy) on the rim side of FR 300, and it's an easy amble down to the rim for some nice views of a steep canyon, the Mazatzals, and south towards the Sierra Anchas

The TrailDEX Map feature on this website is what I normally use. Click on the pulldown menu in the upper RH corner of the TrailDEX Map page, and select "MyTopo" and zoom into any area you want by either double-clicking, using your mousewheel, or the zoom in/out buttons on the LH side.

I was up on FR 300 two weeks ago and it was pretty rough but still OK in a 2WD SUV. If you take FR 95.....it will take you right to East Clear Creek and there is a parking area there......a little further up the road is the road to Kinder Crossing. There is also some BEAUTIFUL camping spots along FR 141 and a small spring/creek called Jones Crossing but as was said earlier...this is a holiday weekend and EVERYONE will be out there. Watch out for all the darned ATV's!!!!

They put a real crimp in my last rim trip. Zipping around past 3:00 am, and even ran right through my camp near the fence at General Spring.

We camped @ Knoll Lake over the Memorial Day weekend. I am not a fan of ATVs, and am even less of one after that camping trip. 4-wheelers, 3-wheelers, Rangers (glorified golf carts), etc. Many people were shooting late into the night. The problem with that area is that it's in Coconino County, and, thus very difficult for county law enforcement to get to because it's so far from the populated areas of that particular county.

Yes, most all the main FR's and most secondary FR's off the main ones are marked at the FR300 intersections. It is recommended that you take a Coconino NF Map for reference. Have you decided if you will access FR300 from Hwy 260 or from Hwy 87? As previously stated, prepare for alot of company! ;)

Is there anywhere where i can download this map?
I will be getting in from hwy 260, because I want to stop at tonto creek on the way.

Also just out of curiosity, is there any picnic spots in the FR300? with like a picnic table or something?

In response to chikkutom:

Don't think the Coconino NF Map is down-loadable.. the Gov wants you to buy it. I would just make a quick trip over to REI and get one (use this useful map with a magnifing glass for FR references and use HAZ for trails). I don't picnic, so someone else will need to take this one. Have a fun holiday on the Rim!

You can print the MYTOPO layer right off TrailDEX Map if you really want to. However as would be the case with any source... unless you have some special type of printer it's gonna be tiny ;)

The Coconino Map IS downloadable ... but not the Sitgreaves Map. That means you only have the map from Knoll Lake west to Hwy 87, not the first 15 miles or so from Hwy 260 to Knoll Lake.

Here's the map:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/maps/m ... o_2000.jpg

The visitor center at Hwy 260 and FR300 has maps for sale, but I don't know if they're open on the weekend ... and certainly is a question on the 4th of July.

There are several "lookout" points along FR300 in the first 3-5 miles west of Hwy 260, but I don't believe any have a picnic table. Just a small paved parking area. I would recommend driving further and getting away from some of the crowds before stopping anyway. There are numerous places to pull over and have excellent views off the rim. Grab a nice rock and have a seat!

While not the official Sitgreaves NF map, this one covers some of the major features of the eastern portion of FR300. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/asnf/maps/image ... es_map.pdf

If you've never done it ... just enjoy the drive. Turn off at the General Springs Cabin and drive to that ... its just a 1/4 mile or so off FR300 and is a nice spot with some history. Otherwise just enjoy the drive and hope there's not too much in the way of crazy traffic making it dusty and irritating. Just 2 miles from Hwy 87 is the Baker Butte Lookout. If the road to the top is closed, its a little bit of a hike, but if its open, drive up and visit the watch lady. She's very nice and often has fresh muffins and cookies baked for her visitors.

Chumley - Have you been to general springs lately? last time I was there the road leading to it was in pretty bad shape, and you would need a high clearance 4WD to get to the TH, did they grade it? I had to park right near the turnoff where the powerpoles are and walk in, not really a deal breaker though, becasue as you say its really on ~1/4mi
