Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12

Post by te_wa »

taking the Pumkin trail/Bull Basin Loop to the top of Kendrick, camp at the nice spot near the cabin. Following PBaenzig's GPS route we can go counter-clockwise on Pumkin trail and return via Bull Basin Trail back to the vehicles. Roughly 12 miles total.

http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?GPS=426

high 70's - high 40's

*you must pack in all the water you will need, none can be found along the way

I am going to make the drive up on Friday evening to car camp at the intersection of fr's 245 and 171.
This is a 3 hr. drive from the valley. Remember, this trip will include a camp at 10,200 feet - please be prepared and/or experienced hiking at such altitude. also, there can be a threat of lightning and foul weather (rain) during late summer months

btw, the fire tower is manned and visitors are welcome. the guy up top has been manning this tower for some 21 years. he has a load of great stories to tell, so spend some time up there!

for those who wish to meet in the e. valley for a carpool, let me know and we can arrange such things. im also leaning towards driving back to e. valley using the scenic hiway #3 (lake mary road) and then on to the Beeline hiway to stop for a late lunch at the Rimside Grille in Pine.

So how long have you been saving that picture to use for just the right occasion?

Good one!!!!!

Been wanting to overnight on Kendrick mountain from the first time I climbed this peak. It'll be alot more challenging this time hauling up all the needed water but it'll be more fun then hanging out in 114 degree heat! I plan on leaving on Friday sometime early to beat traffic and cool off. Can carpool if anyone is interested and plan on car camping at the spot te-wa suggests if I can find it. If not I'll meet everyone at the TH. I'll be in a dark blue Jeep Wrangler with a black soft top.

On second thought I believe I'll drive (my roof dancing days are over) and get in another hike on Friday and/or maybe Saturday morning. I think I'd go blind sitting around all day.

The weather looks nice minus the daily monsoon threat.

I looked for where 235 meets 171 on the MYTOPO layer and couldn't find it. Any clues?

From looking at the Kaibab N.F. map there's a FR 245 that intersects FR 171. It looks like the turnoff is maybe 5 to 7 miles north of the Snowbowl turnoff. I'm guessing thats the spot.

fr 245 from 180, then the intersection with fr171 is where i'll be. We should be just east of this intersection.

i edited the first post giving wrong directions. it is now ready to interperet correctly. fr 245, not 235.
thanks for catching that, Joe.

Great, that way you all will get the rain over there and our hike will be cool and dry :D !

Map to the campsite here > http://www.hikearizona.com/t2009/07/09/ ... 793-06.jpg
Look in the upper left corner....... 'campsite'.

Te-Wa,
As a point of clarification for anyone meeting at the T/H on Saturday AM... Will we start out from the Bull Basin (FR 90A) or Pumpkin (FR 171/149) trailhead
?

it appears to be a lasso with one start/end point.

Here is an overview >> http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/kai/recreation/ ... lbasin.pdf to better illustrate the 'loop'. It's effectively a 'V' shaped hike with a one mile connector trail across the gap - 3 trails in all.

I take it that we will be starting at the Pumpkin Trailhead off of FR 149 then ........

That what my thinking based on the fact that the gps route was linked to the Pumpkin trail.

Definitely a good question.

im looking at the My Topo version and it shows the road as numbered #626, not #149.
the older Topo! version doesnt even show the road at all.
the driving directions call it fr #149, so i'll go with that.
anyway as a lasso it should be easy to follow since none of the (3) triplogs mention difficult route finding.
see you friday, the rest see you saturday. mike

Wow, what a great group on this trip. It's gonna be a keeper for sure. Hey Te-wa, Mike C is gonna pick me up at 2:30pm and head on over to your house. We should be there close to 3:00pm. Is the plan still to stop in Flag for dinner? Just trying to figure out if I need to bring more stuff to munch on tonight. Tell you what man, that extra 10# of water in my pack is noticeable! :o
