From the Hiker Hell blog:
What happened: Two men from the Northeast planned to spend 7 nights in the Alaska wilderness, where the summer brings no darkness and 24 hours of sun. The men took an air taxi to a remote wilderness location.
After one night, an emergency beacon was set off. The National Guard was dispatched to the scene and located the men at 10:30 p.m. later that night. The men were in excellent condition, but couldn’t stand the sun not setting. The long day took a toll on the men and they just wanted to get out early.
The men said they were unprepared to deal with the very long days and the constant exposure to the sun. They just wanted to leave. An extraction point was set up and the men were pulled to somewhere more comfortable."
Someone needs their beacons take away.

Re: Silliness or how not to spend SAR dollars
There should be a substantial penalty for misusing beacons. I've spent a fair amount of time in AK in summer. It's easy to over-tire yourself out during the long days, especailly when you're starting with up to six hours of jet lag. However, short of a serious injury, nothing could make me bail out of a trip on the first day.

They deserve a swift in the pants
No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength
