Trail Fairies??

Post by Cakewalk »

I've seen this a lot, especially on really hot days:

Ill be wandering along a trail minding my own business, and will spot a full bottle of ( store bought ) water laying just off the trail. It happened again today. Was wondering if maybe the park rangers do this or maybe guardian angeles, or perhaps ( gulp! ) Trail Fairies?

Am I insane? Overheated? Has anyone else come across this?

D) All of the Above

just kidding!

What you have there is moron caching. I don't know about you but a sun boiled quart of water doesn't seem real smart. Is it really that hard to take an extra minute to find a better spot?

In other words, cakewalk passes water on the trail and blames it on "Fairies"? Yeah, right :!:

I have buried some water bottles along the trails of my favorite desert hiking spots. You never know what you will run into. You have to bury it at least 6 inches deep and mark it's location by putting a row of three rocks then two right next to it. Sound a little extreme? Maybe. But in times of emergency you will be glad you have it

I've actually watched people placing their water there - and then I ask them why the're doing it and they'll say things like "for emergencies" or "for on the way out."

The funniest thing is when I've seen people doing this on Squaw Peak or Camelback......Ummmm, why didn't you just leave it in your car? - (warning: actual response - non idiotarians beware) "It'll get too hot in there."

You can't make this stuff up.

I've left water out along a trail once. It was on the Apache Maid Trail. We didn't see another hiker once we left the Bell Trail. The water was about 2/3's frozen and the day was getting warm. So, I left it in the sun about 1/2 way up, picked it up on the way back down and had more water, less ice. That was back in the days before I had a Camebak. Now, I don't carry water bottles, unless I'm backpacking.

Mike...

Was just responding that its a good idea to leave water... but for crying out loud, leave it in the shade and somewhat off the trail out of the way...

Was poking fun at those who just leave it on the ground in the boiling hot sun - not talking about you.

Just checkin'

Mine was in the sun on purpose, the ice wasn't melting fast enough and I was almost out of water because of it. I think I had one unfrozen bottle and one frozen. I'd already drank the unfrozen one.

I think leaving water on the ground next to the trail is not too bright. It looks like litter and you never know what animal is looking to relieve himself
