Carlson Stewart "Supes Wilderness East"

Post by te_wa »

Soon available, the 352 page Superstitions guide we've been waiting for... "Superstition Wilderness Trails East" by Carlson/Stewart (he, she who would bring us the "hikers guide to the superstition wilderness") is the newest hiking publication by Clear Creek Publishing and should be on shelves countrywide (hopefully) very soon. There are over 40 hikes listed in the new book, many maps and guides, and of course, local history of the cowboys and miners who made this wilderness so richly glorified.

And to top it off... on page 4 there is an acknowledgement of "..all the folks who wrote comments on hikearizona.com and provided us with updates"

Thanks, Jack and Elizabeth, we've been anticipating this great resource for several years. the time has come!

Very exciting! The "Tony Ranch" article under "Longer Stories" on their website is a fabulous read in itself. I'll read the others in time, as I want to savor each.

Here's the book!

The eastern supes are going to be a little more crowded this winter...

I wish it weren't true, but it could happen. I like it over there. I'm definitely going to pick up this book.

I looked briefly for this site but didn't find it, too many references to the first book. Care to share?

Hopefully there will be some book signing events.

Oh my gosh! :o

I will now have to immediately return to Arizona and make sure the natural cover I placed over my gold mine is still in place and protecting my prospect from all those future claim jumpers! :scared:
Now don't any of you HAZ'ers follow me into the mountain when I return! :gun:

Shawn, click on the link in my original post, then scroll the menu to "longer stories" - "tony ranch"
in the book there is some interesting info about the Tony ranch, Tony family including photos of Ella and 5 of their 8 children circa 1915.
The book also covers some off-trail bits and focuses on old homesteads and ranch operations out there (far, far less of the LDGM lore in the e. supes) and tells of some worthwhile sites to check out.. one of them for instance is an old corral just outside of Angel Basin that might be worth a look. On the concrete trough there are inscribed the words "Bacon & Upton, Aug. 27, 1948, Mage, Duane, Mrs. Gladys Bacon". You'll recall the more popular Upton-Bacon trough at Plow Saddle.. now im curious to know if the trough/corral down near Paradise Spring is one they built also..You can bet that one of those people out in the Eastern Supes this winter will be me!

You mean this one...http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=78906

I'll be heading back in there this season again. I know once I start reading this new book I'll be exploring every chance I get.
If it were possible I'd have a copy in my hands right now. :-k

When I did the catclaw Revenge project this spring I found the trail to the corral to be non-existent and overgrown but I suspect the corral is still there but also overgrown with all kinds of plant life. Please get some pictures of the corral and concrete trough Te-wa when you check it out. This area used to be a nice secluded area to camp in away from the traffic to the ruins and Angel Basin.

I communicated with Jack yesterday to congratulate him on his new book, find out about any additional book signings and to see what was in the pipeline......

"Kurt,
The November 7th and 8th book signing at the SMHS Museum is the only event that we plan to do this year. It is a two day event with many authors that write about the Superstition Mountains.
We are trying not to divert our efforts from writing and research for the next year. We have been working on a revised Hiker's Guide to the Superstition Wilderness, which we titled Superstition Wilderness Trails West. It will be the companion book to Trails East. We hope to have that finished by the end of 2010, but that is a tight schedule. We will include several new hikes on the official trails, but the new stuff will mostly be off trail treks. It will be similar to the Trails East book with GPS data, elevation charts, and more history and probably an additional 32 pages."

responsible off trail trekking in the Supes is 10x more enjoyable, overall, than staying on the signed trails. my 2¢
Boulder Canyon is boring. Trap canyon was great! Rough Canyon was great! Fish creek (upper) was great!
I cant wait to do Goat Canyon to Fish creek next month. That should be great! ;)
