Fall in white mountains

Post by chikkutom »

Hi all,

Fall is approaching! Since its coming, i wanted to see it in the white mountains area. Main objective is to see the colors and shoot some photos. Anyone know when the peak time is in that area? Also does anyone have any recommendations for places to see fall in that area. I hear that alpine is a good place for viewing.(picnic hill?) what about escudilla mountain area? I am also trying to find that classic scene of stream and fall foliage too.
Thanks for you help!

Aren't we all, keep an eye on the Foliage Map and participate in logging trips or you'll have bad photographic karma ;)

I reported on 2009-09-16: The Aspens are turning in the dipping meadows on Kaibab Plateau
Elizabeth reported 2009-09-23: Escudilla's north slope, which can be seen from Springerville, is all golden now with the aspen leaves.
Jim reported 2009-09-24: (Elden) The aspens on top are basically at their peak, but the other vegetation like the oaks is not quite beginning to change. The aspens on the Peaks are all green, as observed from Elden's summit.

Bear in mind Escudilla doesn't have the classic stream or blood red maples

Didnt even know there was a foliage map here. Will keep an eye on it. So most of the lower areas will be at peak around that area by next weekend? I was planning on going next weekend. I was thinking of doing the scenic drive through AZ261 and AZ276 and stay the night at alpine. How is the south fork trail during that time. I saw that there are streams in the area, but dont know if there will be any fall foliage. Then the next day shoot some around the escudilla mountains area?

South Fork is not your best bet right now as it is lower in elev. Further up on L. Col, near Greer or Baldy for creekside photos is a better bet. South Fork will get better later, but doesn't have as many aspens as upper areas.

All this talk is making me want to go hiking. I am actually going to have a weekend off this weekend. Well, at least most of the weekend... I have to work in the evening.
