Cactus to Clouds
Rated as the 5th toughest day hike in the continental U.S. Its like going from Everest basecamp to summit without the extreme cold and lack of oxygen, athough it will be cold in Nov. You'll gain over 10k of elevation in about 16miles and then hike down another 5.5 to catch the tram back. If your truely interested, PM me. I'd like to get about 6 people so we can have two cars and leave one where the tram drops off. Tenative date would be drive up on 11/13 start hike 11/14 very dark and very early
Palm springs to the top of Mt San Jacinto. The only thing comparing it to Everest really is the distance and elevation gain. This hike is about 1,000 feet less gain than basecamp to summit. And I can tell you that from Experience, because I did once watch a show on the hike up Denali

Re: Cactus to Clouds
Man, I wish I could do this one! I've wanted to try it for ages - but I've got another trip planned for that very weekend, as it happens
. Get high (on altitude) for me - and do a Wendy at the top! (Here's a guide!)

Doing the Wendy with a cool hair thingy (I forgot what its called but remember the thread). I'll probably do it next year also after the snow melts but before it gets too hot. Bummer you can't make it

Re: Cactus to Clouds
I read "Into Thin Air," so I think I'm qualified. Also count me in as "interested." I have family in Morongo Valley, CA, and I'm aching to punish myself on something other than a StepMill @ the gym. Need to check my schedule. I was planning on doing something west of Morongo Valley, but it looks like the entire Angeles National Forest got barbecued.

It's a fun hike, don't let the bar at the tram stop you from getting to the top though.

there appears to be a group planning to do back to back, double... on this hike. You might want to connect with them: http://www.mtsanjacinto.info/viewtopic.php?t=1694

Re: Cactus to Clouds
Gee Bob I don't know if you can get your man card stamped if a woman is doing it twice. Might have to x out C2C with some nail polish
I didn't take the time to read through the NINE pages. Perhaps they're doing the easier angle with tram rides down. Guess you still get a boy stamp if that's the case ;)
Going down is just as much if not more of a factor. Nevertheless would be interesting to see at what point you get tired going up.

Re: Cactus to Clouds
Ok I looked at the link... they're only doing to the tram without summiting. So they're doing 16k and 20 miles. I'm doing 21miles and 10k. Mines longer. So what if they're doing 6k more of elevation.

Re: Cactus to Clouds
Gee no wonder that Rick guy is going to do it three times. Is there really an extra 4k in one mile, what the hell is it a wall or perhaps worse - inverted backwards
Okay never mind, I read the hike description, I get it now.

Re: Cactus to Clouds
They're doing 10 miles 8k then taking the tram down and repeat. I'm going 10 miles and 8k then to summit then tram down. From tram to summit is 11 miles RT plus 2k elevation gain.
Opps... I missed your I get it.

Re: Cactus to Clouds
I'm in the planning stages for C2C number 2, but instead of staying up for 24 hours straight...I'll get a hotel to camp at. It will probably be Mayish depending on snow,etc.. No tram ride down this time
. I'll probably be solo
