You asked for it...

Post by PaleoRob »

and now you've got it. Kinda. Its not here yet.

The Plan: Chinle Wash dayhike. Phonecians and Tucsonans may wish to spend the night in Kayenta the night before. We'll spend most of the day hiking to and in the Chinle Wash floodplain in Comb Ridge, exploring ruins and rock art. Total mileage will probably depend on how much exploration we do, but minimum is 5 miles. It'll be hot, though hopefully not unbearable. Trip could be canceled due to inclimate weather (we are not going to be crossing Chinle Wash during a flash flood!). Will end at Gouldings for some Navajo Tacos. Yum!

You: Should be unafraid of quicksand and crossing a swift, knee-deep stream. I should also know a little about you from either the forum here or have hiked with you, considering the sensitive nature of our destination. GPSes are welcome, but I'd prefer that any GPS tracks made are not published online.

Hazards: Quicksand, semi-feral cattle, swift-flowing stream, lack of shade, remote location.

Rewards: Lots of fun, beautiful canyon, amazing ruins, and should be some good company too!

I thot we had just a fabulous group; many knowledgeable folks on this hike/adventure for sure. Rob, I can't thank you enough for putting this together. It was even better than I anticipated. What an incredible day! With the ruins being the featured presention, other highlights:
My first visit to Monument Valley plus getting to see it from both sides now - north and south and during the day and near sunset,
the full moon setting over Monument Valley, and
my first so-called "small" Navajo taco and Prickly Pear Iced Tea, a perfect reward to end a nearly perfect day... YUMMY!

...and thanks to Wendy for taking Anne & I to the Wupatki Ruins and Sunset Crater too.

If the level is novice/intermediate for the Rainbow Bridge adventure, I would like to participate as well.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Great scenery, great people, great ruins, and great beer! Thanks again for a wonderful trip! Let me know about Rainbow Bridge/Grand Gulch. I think we have the same spring break.

Megan! Glad to see you over here! Don't worry, getting to know Hikearizona is like falling in love... You don't really know what's going on, you feel out of sorts and confused, then suddenly you're hooked and you can't get enough.

Okay, so it's less like falling in love than it is like getting addicted to caffeine - but I like falling in love better, so I'm sticking with it! :sl:

Another Grand Gulch trip would be sweet next spring. Like Kane to Bullet... I still need to do the upper section.
Yea, canyoneering is an extreme sport... EXTREMELY dramatic!!! =p

I was thinking of going in Government and then out Collins, as I haven't been down that way before, but I wouldn't mind doing a Kane/Bullet trek again either.

Hopefully it won't snow, but I guess that is what made the trip memorable. :D
