reflecting pool in Sedona

Post by sundevilstormin »

Hi all you experts, looking for directions to this spot overlooking Cathedral Rocks:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24218095@N08/2294247500/

looks northwest-ish and fairly high above Oak Creek. I'm thinking that it might be just off Red Rock Loop before it drops into the valley south of the high-school, but not sure.

any help would be appreciated.

Being fairly familiar with that area, I almost guarantee it is on the very south end of Scheurman Mountain. None of the views along Red Rock Loop looks like this. Here's a map showing my guess as the big red dot:

I think Scheurman is too far and it's not really red rock from what I remember though it's been a long time.

Judging by the angle and then looking at Satellite imagery it looks to be over by Chavez. The background cream ridge is key to the angle. The angle and the elevation would match but it doesn't seem there's red rock there either. I'm going with the patch of red rock one inch straight up on the border from the bottom on the lower left of this photo, which looks to be above RRSP parking http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=37803

Always wondered about that spot... Derek Von Briesen has a great shot from there.

From that far over, I don't think the spire in the middle of Cathedral would be visible like it is in the photo. The photo is almost a dead on Red Rock Crossing view, just higher. From over by Chavez, Cathedral looks way different. Somebody's just going to have to go out there and figure it out!

well, just got the skinny from another photog who has shot a bunch up there:
http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo- ... rizona.php
http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo- ... tation.php

"The reflecting pool shot is above RRC you get there by taking a left hand turn onto a dirt road at the big corner before RRC entrance, drive to the top of the road and pull out before the dead end walk to your right until the brush gives way to the slick rock clearing"

Hope to head up there in the next week or so to do a similar shoot... now to find out if there is water in the pool...

Awesome! Give an update on the water conditions if you can. Looks like a really fun place to shoot!

Looks to be just north of where I was guessing.

No, that's the standard creek spot. The reflecting pool is higher up on a nearby bluff.

I found it :y: ... take Red Rock Loop south of the highschool, take left hand turn onto Chavez Ranch Rd toward Crescent Moon park, but when it makes the hard right turn to the park continue on Chavez Ranch (dirt road) past the houses and find a parking spot. Hike 1/4 mile toward the creek and the slickrock appears. (shhh keep this a secret!) The shelf with the pools is just above Crescent Moon park.

yeah yeah... we should always trust our HAZarific leader! :worthy:
I guesss yoiu nailed it pretty good with
"I'm going with the patch of red rock one inch straight up on the border from the bottom on the lower left of this photo, which looks to be above RRSP parking lot"

although technically it is not Red Rock State Park, but instead Crescent Moon, or alternatviely, Red Rock Crossing... just sayin'

Now if I could just embed my time-lapse videos..... :D
