Fines?

Does anyone know how much the fine is for building a make-shift cabin of sorts in the middle of nowhere?

Jeremy - I know you're bummed about your cabin burning down and all - but should you really be building another one on property you don't own? Isn't that called squatting?

I've often thought about doing that. There is some privatly owned property in the National forests, maybe you could work out a deal with the owner for a long term lease.

I guess I should have explained a little bit better. My brother built a cabin that's about 10 ft by 8 ft and about 6 ft tall. It looks just like a lincoln log cabin and thats just as he built it. It is located in the middle of nowhere and you have to use GPS to find it. It is 30 miles from the nearest town. Why did he build it you ask? He is a big cross-country guy. He loves tracking across the wilderness like the pioneers of old. The spot where he picked is in the middle of a route he hikes that takes about four days. This past winter he got stuck in a snow storm and sure could have used a shelter to take cover in. Instead, he used a tent and almost got buried up to the top. Since then he has made a few small shelters along the way just in case of emergencys. This cabin has trees all around it and you can't tell its there until you're about 50 ft from it. The area is pretty dense. I've only been there once but I have to say that it is amazing. And that's all I've got to say about that.

I have thought about doing something like that too, but it takes alot of work and dedication. I will build a shelter if a few things happen. Bad weather is coming, I will be staying there for a while, and I didn't bring a tent of any kind. Then I wouldn't think twice. I think it's kinda fun. It's like being a little kid again making a fort

I've looked at these for years and have always been intrigued. My uncle who lived in Michigans UP lived in a wall tent for years, after he retired. It was warm and cozy during the winter. I could write a book about uncle Don, he was a woodsman at heart, but ended up drinking a tad too much near the end. He was making his own dandolin wine. He had a wit that was unique. When my dad died from a stroke, uncle Don came up to me at the funeral, put his arm around me and said "It was probably for the best because had dad lived, he would have ended up being a vegetarian for the rest of his life". It broke me up and I had the giggles for the rest of the service.

My oldest daughter has 80 acres up in Trapper Creek, Alaska. There are places like Jeremy describes up there. I have never come across anything like that here though. Interesting idea.

He told me that nobody would know he was there! I'll have to tell him to get out of the front tard and return the fence

Anybody happen to catch the article in this month's Outside magazine about "dream acres"?....talks about how to find and buy your own paradise...according to the article, you can pick up 73 acres of prime land in Cochise County for about $88,614.

I think Jeremy's brother got a better price though

I couldn't see the forest service going through the trouble of tracking down who made it. If you get caught using it, you could easily say it was there when you got there. So unless you get caught in the process of building it, or tell a bunch of people on the internet that you are going to do it, you would probably be pretty safe.
