Reavis Mountain School & other stuff...
Hi Again,
Sorry for the multiple posts, I thought of a few questions this weekend out on my hike in the Sups.
One, What is Reavis Mountain School? Just curious, I've seen it on the map but never really heard it mentioned anywhere.
Two, What is the history and name of the mountain with "< Phoenix" spelled out on it located in the north east side of the valley?
Thanks in advance.
Paul

Re: Reavis Mountain School & other stuff...
I asked that same question about a year ago...I was told it was originally for pilots to help them know where they are...most of the communities in AZ have some type of letter on a mountain nearby...pixelfrog wrote:

Don't know if it's true, but at least it's an answer...

There are similar but different stories on the "<Phoenix" sign, see the links below. Depending on who you choose to believe, it was constructed during World War II, or during the 1950's, but in both cases as a marker for planes flying into Phoenix.

I don't know if the mountain is named. It seems I recall hearing it's called "Usery Mountain" somewhere.

Go out on the trail to Reavis Ranch and you'll probably hear poor Ol' Elisha spinning in his grave!

I know it confuses me. Pass Mountain looks like it's in the Goldfields on a map.ck1 wrote:It is Usery Mountain. Pass Mountain is directly east. Mike and Hooli! Do I detect sarcasim about the Reavis Ranch Mountain School? I think it sounds awesome! I have always wanted to do a weekend or more there. Organic fruits, veggies (kinda like my backyard)! Tinctures? My remedy of choice. Go ahead make fun if you like. But have you ever been there? 8O

Cindy, I wasn't being sarcastic about what they do. I just was surprised that someplace so remote would have their own website. Seems to me they teach some very useful information, there's nothing at all wrong with self-reliance, especially in the wilderness.Cindy Coons wrote:Mike and Hooli! Hoolie - upon further reflection - I think you also look a great deal like Yoda.
Not to mention the fact that you two have never been seen in the same place at the same time (I have it all documented - it's totaly provable). Hey, wait a minute.....could it be?.....
