Post by AZLOT69 »

Sure its an older model but they work great if you don't need the latest and greatest.

Just FYI.. there is now one less of these on the shelf at Wal-Mart. :)

User lessons would be great; maybe over in the Lost Dog area of the McDowell Preserve? I will also try and go to a GPS session at REI. I am also a manual reader; may not understand it but I read it :-k .

My brother gave me one of his old GPS units, a Garmin too, but it turned out to be broken. My other boss at work said he would lend/give me his but after hours of looking for it, he couldn't find it. So, I had to bite the bullet on this.

Plus with some of the hikes AZLOT has been posting in the Goldfields in particular, I think a GPS would definitely be a plus. And NOW hopefully I am done with major gear purchases for hiking/backpacking... at least for this year ;) .

This is a great GPS. I would recommend everyone getting one get a lexan screen protecter, you can buy them for 10-15 dollars online. Otherwise yours may get scratched up as mine from just being in your pocket. The screen scratches very easily.

Please post a recommended link for where to buy. This is probably a good idea for most all GPS models not just this eTrex Vista :thanx:

Hank, I bought this: http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/ ... =382340529

But I recommend someone buy something different with a more durable film/cover. Mine is scratched beyond the point where buying one would be useful.

The promo for the ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD looks convincing, but I did not buy it.

With a little trimming, one of the shields I used to use on my Palm would be perfect.

I've been using invisible shields on my stuff for a while (three years now on a couple items.. with no noticeable wear, and I HAVE done the key thing on my ipod touch more than a couple times).. more than likely they sell one precut. In general I hate cases, they add bulk and tend to trap schmutz in it, which then in turn causes damage

That is one awesome deal. I use the legend HCX which is almost the Vista, and it has done a lot of backcountry map work for me. If anyone ever wants some instruction in the use of these electronic marvels and some of the neat little things that they can do just get ahold of me and a GPS'ing we will go.

okay, since you all started this, now that I have my new toy  ...I was talking about Peak 5024 and my brother says that's probably how high it is and that's why they call it Peak 5024. That seems quite logical to me. :-k So when they don't name a Peak, do they just give it the elevation for a name?

I see on the TrailDex you call it Superstition Peak 5024 (Siphon) and Superstition Peak 5057 (Carney) vs say a Peak 2429 - Phx Mtn Preserves... I presume you do that for search reasons rather than Peak 5024 - Superstition Peak?

And as always, thanks for your help.

There are two main peaks on Superstition Mountain, hence the verification. Generally if a peak is named on topographical maps it gets that name, otherwise it gets the elevation as it's name. I added the trailheads to the peak names on Superstition Mountain for clarification.
