hiking resolutions for 2010?

Post by oceanwithin »

I suspect many of you include hiking-related items on your list of new year's resolutions. with the new year upon us, what are your goals? hikes to accomplish, mileages to beat, peaks to bag, routes to find, gear to acquire (and..injuries to avoid)?

just curious what you crazy hikers have planned for the coming year!!

My goal is to keep up with Bob and Joe.. :sl:

Now for more realistic options....
1. WCC thru hike.. at least calloway to bull pen..
2. Cactus to Clouds Round 2 (have to make it to summit this time)
3. R2R2R
4. Humphreys (just never get around to it)
As far as overall goals i wanna do at least 750 miles and 250k aeg.. At least one day hike of 35-40 miles, and a week long backpack of at least 100 miles.. I also want to train for and compete in a Triathalon. Thanks to my ball and chain (girlfriend) being sawed off my leg, i should be able to complete this list :y: .. O! i also wanna do MLDV at night this summer under a full moon...

My goals for 2010:

1) Post every hike I make in my triplog (this includes the photos from the hike). For 2009 I only posted about one tenth of what I actually did.
2) Hike and camp at Flatiron in March so I can get some good photos of wild flowers.
3) Hike the Google Earth plotted route for Skull Cave that I mapped 6 months ago.
4) Buy a pair of climbing shoes to improve the safety of my free climbing.
5) Hike Humphreys in the summer/spring and take the snowbowl lift so I can get some good photos.
6) Camp and hike at Havasupai Falls (have never done it)
7) Hike Camelback Cholla trail at least twice a week (after all come February I will be living at the Capri on 40th st. and Camelback).

There are so many other things I would like to do, but I tend to bite off more than I can chew when it comes to time commitments. I am way over involved with work, school, church, etc. So I guess my final resolution would be to take time for me so that I can meet my hiking goals, ha! :D

This is one of my goals, too - though I want to do it as a backpack/overnight kinda thing. I'm thinking down the north, stay overnight at BA camp, up and down the south (S. Kaibab-BA loop) then out the north. May seems like the best time to try this - as soon as they open up that North Rim stuff... Maybe we can get that together!

Yeah, I am keeping Rainbow Bridge as a possibility. I always have vehicle problems, though. Anyone want to pick me up and drop me off again? I'd help with the gas...

I actually do have quite a few New Year's Goals, but didn't want to bore people with them. I posted earlier regarding Boucher Trail, and Blue Primitive Area. Hope to get my ultralight kit started this year. Want to do a lot more long dayhikes, of 15 to 22 miles or so.

Want to lose about 15 more pounds, and have already lost about 4 or 5 over the past month (yes, even during the holidays!) Weight really slows a person down. Weight on your body is just about like weight in your pack or on your bicycle frame, I think. I'd like to pare down to the "wiry-muscled old lady" category. I know several of that type of old lady, who are a lot older than I am, and they do seriously kick butt on the trail.

Then I have school--I have finally decided to finish a bachelor's degree. I'm doing it online, via NAU. I start this coming Monday! If all works out as planned, I should graduate in a couple of years. Y'all can come to the graduation ceremony. You'll be able to tell who I am--I'll be that wiry-muscled old lady...

On another note...
I like how friends and family enthusiastically lie about how they're really going get out and hike a LOT more. Typically happens around new years, incredible wildflower seasons and the occasional random mention. Makes me wonder about their other lies. Perhaps telling banker friends they're REALLY going to get serious about investing. Or telling the gardner at Home Depot how they're going to have a HUGE garden.

Bah, humbug.

Okay - So I'll quantify mine here in writing for posterity:

1. Snowshoeing (scheduled for Feb)
2. R2R2R Backpack (May? Takers?) : rambo :
3. An international trip (currently exploring Thailand) :-$
4. Exceed last year's mileage (388) and longest single hike (55) and most elevation gained in one trip (10k) :wlift:
5. Keep my sanity, marriage and job intact while accomplishing the above :scared:

As usual, so many of you inspire me :thanx: . I am so happy with this new phase of my life. :PMIC: ... oh except for when I feel like this :stretch: , followed by :y: ! But mostly thanks to Kat for getting me past the casual hiker stage and to Wendy for taking me under her wing for the backpacking stage. Now on to 2010!

I want to see more which means that once in awhile I've got to hike faster (less pictures) :( :o ,
longer (more miles in a day - like maybe the Dutchman Trail to test my limits) ,
higher (both ways - like maybe the Ridgeline and/or the Grand Canyon) : rambo : .

And most importantly, this year I really want to get more comfortable 8-[ with this backpacking thing that you all make look so easy. :worthy:
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

I failed... My goal was 100 miles. Fell short by 40. Next year will be @ least 1 backpacking trip a month and 100 miles by the end of the year.

well...2011 has some of the remaining months for my 60th year, so I'm hoping to better my one month AEG total as I try to lay base miles to get back in shape. Ideally it will also show an improvement on total miles and total annual elevation gains. Lots of adventure hiking... lots more bike mileage... and a renewed focus on fun trail running.

After a low of 175 mi/36K AEG in 2008 (when I was in MN for 4+ months) then bouncing back to 387 mi/73K in 2009, I figured I'd shoot for 500 mi & 100K AEG in 2010.

While the hikes I managed to post on HAZ add up to something like 460 mi and 91,500 AEG, the spreadsheet with all my hikes (yup, I wuz an engineer in a previous life) :o I topped out yesterday at 531.13 miles. The unlucky .13 means I just missed my AEG goal. Dang!! I missed my 100,000' AEG goal by barely 300 feet! If I'd had just 4' 10" more on each of my hikes, almost the height of my daughter-in-law, I'd have made it with inches to spare. Oh well... that's missing it by ~.3% so if it's close enough for horseshoes or hand grenades, it's close enough for me!

If I boost my goal for 2011 by the same amount added in the last year my new goal would be ~690 miles and 135K AEG. But now that I'm scratching the surface of my 7th decade, I think I'll settle for an even 10 miles and 20K AEG for each year.

So here we go, the goal for 2011 is... 600 mi & 120,000' AEG.
