New Tech Toys at CES 2010

Post by chumley »

So I'm a little bit of a tech-nerd sometimes and I just read about this being released at the Consumer Electronic Show next week.

Delorme is introducing a new handheld GPS receiver (PN-60w) that "pairs" with your SPOT and allows you to send text messages, tweets, and Facebook updates from the GPS device by utilizing the SPOT satellites.

So part of me thinks this is absolutely stupid ("I just took a crap in the woods" is not something that anybody needs to know -- and that's likely to end up happening).

But there IS something nice about having the ability to send a customized message when on the trail instead of something you wrote before you left.

According to the article, Delorme and SPOT will be introducing other products together during the next week. Can't wait to see...

I've said it before on here somewhere... the SPOT thing isn't going to last. This is still ten-year mid-level technology. Seriously, who carries a pager anymore.

At least they've taken the tubes out of it and are starting to get the size down.

I'm still waiting for the GPS, Phone, P&S Camera, it may be a possibility with HTC Touch Cruise. Camera- yes, Phone-Yes, GPS- Well it looks like it's road navigation only.

Just let it function like a garmin and throw in whatever sat phone, text message capability that is out there into it and it's a start.

I hiked out of the canyon a day early a few years ago to catch a bears playoff game. If I could have gotten score updates I would have stayed the other night.
