Hiker missing in the Supes

Post by Mike »

I just saw this story about a hiker missing in the Superstitions. Anyone seen an update on this story?

the 5 or 6 o'clock news said they found her cell phone around 4pm. It had an outgoing call around 11am.

Something isn't good, cause with all those news choppers scanning the area she surely would have been found if alive. Unless perhaps she was sleeping in a cave. Just hoping for the best...

It was exciting to see all the overview shots of the Superstions. Wish I still had VHS!!! to record. They had an overview shot of Weavers, LaBarge, Geronimo Head, etc.

Lost Hiker/Not to make light of a serious story but...

Post by GTG_AZH »

The man, who has not been identified and is not connected to Frizzell, probably fell while rock climbing on the western end of the Superstitions.
The announcer on KJZZ this morning said that they found the body of the dead man "just east of the Lost Dutchman Mine". It sure made me laugh while ironing work clothes this morning. Not the death, the mine.

I'm sure they meant Lost Dutchman State Park. If not... anyone up for the Massacre Grounds this weekend!!!!

Channel 3 just did a promo for the 10 o'clock news and they mentioned this story. I'm with Teva, something must be wrong if she didn't get where she could be spotted easily or she holed up in a cave to wait out the heat. Hopefully this one has a happy ending.

If I read right this was her first trip into the Supes?

I hope anybody reading this that hasn't gone into the Superstitions will seriously reconsider waiting until it's twenty degrees cooler. There's a major difference between a populated, one junction trail like Squaw and the desolate labyrinth of the Supes in the Summer.

I read it it was her first trip, too, but she often climbed Camelback and South Mountain. That's hardly the same!! There's tons of folks around C'back & S.M. You could easily go for miles in the Supes without seeing anyone this time of year, especially if you got off trail.

Channel 10 reports clothing and a book found in the area too. Nothing really new.

DPS has brought in a sniffer dog.

Wanna bet what the book is?

I'd say that applies for almost any time of year.

What I wanna know is what took so FRIGGIN! long for this to surface.

If she didn't come home last night, something should have been underway long ago.

Maybe it wasn't reported until today, I don't know?

I'm curious, does the 24 hour rule hold true for reporting somebody lost in the desert? Cause that's WAY to long!

From my experience with Maricopa Mountain Rescue, the delay in action usually results from the family and friends being uninformed as to the missing person's itinerary. Often the family doesn't know who to call and what to tell those people....which makes me ask...

How many HAZ hikers leave an itinerary? I know I always do, and it's rather involved...I've considered posting a template of sorts as an article...there are TONS of things the hiker can do to better prepare others to "find" them in the event they get lost...

atemplate away!

ck1, I say template away! Iteneraries can be the most useful thing used in finding someone, AS LONG AS THEY STICK TO IT.

This is a public information site, so an itenerary template could only help most of us. Email it and joe or myself can convert it to PDF format to make it "universal" so to speak. Or joe could put it up in multiple formats.

Oh yeah, remember to include the location of the Lost Dutchman Mine somewhere hidden in it too fellow NPR listener.

GTG -

This weekend I thought about our conversation about the Backpacker articles about getting lost...

My buddy Tony and I altered our itinerary, and the whole time I kept say..."we're going to end up in backpacker"...

The one thing all those people did was alter their itinerary, and thus, noone could find them.

I'll send what I usually fill out in to Joe...I shared it with Cody Ludin via email and he told me a few things to add...pretty cool of him..

I wonder if an online itinerary would be a good idea... Sign in - say where you going, how long you plan to be gone and sign out when you get back. I mean not to hold HAZ responsible for you but it might be a good place to leave a clue if something happens.

On the flip side, there are those that will forget to sign out etc....

Just a thought....

From news media reports, she went hiking sunday and had no returned by sunday night when she was reported overdue. I live in Gold Canyon and left my home at five am to bike ride when I noted a helicopter flying east toward Peralta Canyon about six am. Her vehicle was reportdly found near the Peralta trailhead.

Regarding leaving information as to your trip plans, include the map name (including map edition) or reference information source. Maps etc may have different names/numbers for the same feature, trail, road.

Re. the book they found, there's pretty much only one book it could be. The only info I have is what you guys have posted, but I'm wondering why they're finding her stuff, particularly her phone, but not her? Nobody would purposely abandon their stuff. You need it all, or else it wouldn't be in your pack. This stinks of foul play.

And what you got against KJZZ?!! That's the only place in town where you can hear decent jazz. You're sure not gonna hear Ella or Miles on KYOT.
