Improving the visual accuracy of tracks via editing ...

Post by paulshikleejr »

Thank you, everyone, for all the feedback under the topic "Is bad accuracy of tracks normal?"

I've adjusted my expectations.

And, with an inordinate amount of click-drag-drop action, I've also adjusted a version of the Camelback Walk route I saved down from my unit earlier today and posted for review at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&gl ... 73f950ec80.

The edited track is: http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?DR=&G=9109.

Given the amount of craftsmanship needed, I won't be doing the "hand editing" thing that often, but will from time to time.

I did the editing via an online track editing utility I found at http://wtracks.free.fr/. This utility not only allows you to move dots, it also lets you add dots to the end.

Does anyone know of a "better" track editing utility (maybe one that allows you add dots between dots or to draw a track just by clicking and dragging out a path)?

There is a downloadable program at http://www.knackes.com/blog/index.php?p ... ditor-1070, but that doesn't seem to work for me. There may be more items at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page.

Another edited track for comparison: http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?GPS=9110 versus http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&gl ... 1e8e34257d ...

big_load, how did you hand edit your tracks?

I mostly used the track editing tools under the "tools" heading in MapSource. They're not all that great; but creating a whole, new clean track that way isn't especially hard.

I do the same thing as big_load... The tools in Mapsource aren't wonderful but they get the job done. The last track I submitted (Boden Canyon, CA) took some cleaning up. I had some signal bounce-back from canyons, lost signal issues due to tree over-hangs, etc. The original track looked like total doo doo. I could have finessed the final track a bit more but it will do the job for most folks... There are other programs available that will help you edit map data but I haven't tried them (TOPO! is a pretty good one I hear...).
