Fossil Springs - canceled

Post by AndreyP »

Hike&swim season continues!
If anybody with high clearance or 4WD vehicle commits to hike and drive, we'll go via Flume Trail. Otherwise it will depend on road conditions and may end up going down Fossil Springs trail, entering FR 760 from Strawberry.
UPD. Flume Trail closure order is still in effect, so we're going by the Fossil Springs Trail.

UPD2. Date changed from Saturday, Jun 12 to Sunday, Jun 13.
Leaving Deer Valley 7:45am, Fountain Hills 8:30, Strawberry 9:50. The plan is to be back in Phoenix no later than 7:30pm.

The water is 72F year round.

My concern is that if they host a Blues Festival "at the end of paved section of Fossil Springs Road", it might imply that the road is actually closed to traffic and it may be impossible to get to trailhead from Strawberry.

The water's about 75 degrees. I'll be there, but camping below the bridge and hiking/exploring/swimming upstream from there. We're leaving very early, so hopefully we'll miss the traffic jams. Perhaps our paths may cross...

Well, I think it isn't going to be very warm and this tourist festival may make it impassible on the road in, so I guess I'll cancel, again. If you want to go next week, I think it will have warmed up buy then. I would have thought we would be warm in mid-June, but I guess not.

I can tell you're from Flag (as am I originally) from the "not very warm" comment... ;)
It's already been 110 down here in the Surface of the Sun, I'm very much looking forward to camping in the cool temps! Going back up to the rim country on the 25th, maybe Christopher Creek area, maybe Workman's Creek for more camping and hiking - Haven't been to the Sierra Anches in years...

Well, I'm sorry to cancel, again, but I don't want to drive there tomorrow to see the road closed, or to not swim because its cold. Yeah, as you probably remember, it hardly ever gets hot, or warm for that matter, in Flagstaff, so I like it to be hot for a swim. I might do this next weekend, or early next week. I think I'll post it if no one else does. I might also consider the Bell Trail, or Chavez Crossing in Sedona. I just hope the weather cooperates and we get back over 90.

I've just returned from Madera Canyon and now I finally don't feel like going. All signs point to cancellation of this hike&swim. Maybe I'll go to Saguaro or Apache lake and do a swim-no-hike :)
As probably I'll feel tired again next Saturday after Humphreys Peak hike, I don't move this hike to next Sunday but just cancel it.

Sorry guys, you missed a beautiful weekend in FC. The temps were perfect, and little puffy clouds (no rain) made for some really pretty scenes (pics to be uploaded soon).
Despite all the signs indicating no campfires, the group next to us decided the signs didn't apply to them and they had a big fire Sat night. Sunday morning they were presented with a nice warm greeting from the Forest Service personnel, along with a $5,000 citation! (I asked the ranger). Yeah! It's about time these idiots were shown that no fires means just that

:y: I'm so glad there's some sort of enforcement! Maybe there's hope for that poor canyon after all!
