Nalgene bottle weights

Post by pencak »

In preparing my pack list for my summer trip: :wrt:
http://hikearizona.com/mypack.php?ver=3&PID=254
I discovered that those plain white food grade plastic Nalgene bottles weigh FAR LESS than the comparable clear plastic versions.
Clear smoked "designer" color plastic 32oz = 6.38 oz
Plain white food grade plastic 32oz = 4.13 oz
2.25 oz or more than 50% more weight for the "designer" plastic version. Who cares if stuff stains the white food grade plastic version. That's a big difference! :o

The poly will take more abuse, but in general.. they're all too heavy.. Used gatorade bottles (and platypus bags) for the win! :y:

That's what I do. A 3L platypus bag weighs about 1.4 oz.

+1 on the platapus. Nalgene bottles are only good for looking hip in photos and mixing chemicals in a laboratory.

The preference for Nalgene over some other type of water carrying device is much like what PageRob said about the desire to carry a gun at all times or being able to carry a gun at all. times. Its like ford vs Chevy. I like my Nalgenes. They attach to my filter, they wash easy, they're convenient for me, I reuse them so I consider them environmentally friendly as apposed to a Gatorade or other bottles, they never shatter when I drop them. If I had a problem with the weight of them I think I should start to do a little exercise. If you want to consider 2.25 oz to be a lot of weight, fine. I can't even detect 2.25 ounces in my hand.

I use an aquafina bottle for my denatured alcohol.

It seems like that would have a negative affect on hike hydration.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to take a swig out of the wrong bottle. Fortunately, the odor is a dead giveaway, even if I overlook the different cap.

I'm a Nalgene guy myself. Easy to clean. Easy to add mix to. I know exactly how much I have.

I like the platypus. I carry a Nalgene for my Steripen. MRS for cache bags. I use a Camelbak milspec NBC for my bladder.
But for carrying my Herradura I only trust a klean kanteen - I don't care what it weighs - I trust it to carry my Herradura safely. :sl:

My vodka resides in my Nalgene flask. And to counter the hydration issue: I use Emergen-C and water for my mixer. :D

Are they both poly

I don't see the point in buying something I already have like Gatorade or water bottles that are virtually free and lighter. Now I do find the itty bitty ones great for my olive oil & balsamic vinegar :D

I use the Nalg too because of my filter. Sucks when you're in a larger group and you're the only one with a Nalg style and they all want to use my filter to fill their plastic disposables.

Check out the Nalgene Cantene if you must have a screw-on connection. It's not that hard to use just about any filter with a small-mouth bottle if you're prepared for it. My tolerance for people that expect somebody else to provide a filter varies quite a bit, but the default setting is low.
