Most Flagstaff area trails closed

Post by Jim »

Due to the Schultz Fire, most trails in the Flagstaff area are closed. This includes the tourist popular Humphrey Summit Trail. Basically, ALL trails on the Peaks, in the Dry Lake Hills/ Mt Elden area, and the O'Leary Sunset Crater area.

Jim, don't bother answering my PM. So I hiked from the Bismark Lake TH off Hart Prairie Road today. I guess that was illegal. We saw two other groups of people up there.

HPP, the area closure wasn't announced until this afternoon, and I'm sure that signage wasn't posted yet. I think you were in the clear. Tomorrow will be a different story.

Ah, I was wondering about that actually. I searched the web for like an hour this morning looking for a closure report, didn't see one and figured I was good to go. I saw Snow Bowl Road was closed and was surprised to find Hart Prairie Road open. I guess that makes since because of all the private property on that road. Personally, I think getting busted for being in that area seems ridiculous considering the fire really has no chance of spreading to that area (unless the winds happened to turn 180 degrees and sustain it for a couple days, which isn't going to happen).

Typical AZ government over reaction.

Anyone remember ten years ago when Janet closed down all of the forests in the state because of the "fire danger"?

June is wicked dry here, always has been, probably always will be. So while people tend to start a large % of the fires, closing down an area part time is not going to save anything.

A big fence around the forests and an intelligence test at that gate just might work though.

I'm glad I got my Cirque hike in on Sunday. I wish I had done Elden Yesterday for the exercise, but I guess I won't be hitting that 5 days in a row as I had thought of doing this week. I can still go to Bill Williams, and I might even consider Kendrick (of all mountains) to hike this weekend.
